OpenAI Unlocks Image Generation for All Users

OpenAI has announced that its popular image generation feature is now accessible to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier. This decision follows an overwhelming response to the feature, which has gained significant traction on social media, particularly for its Studio Ghibli-inspired artwork. Previously, the image generation tool was exclusive to paid subscribers, but the company has now made it available to everyone, starting from April 1, 2025.

Widespread Access to Image Generation

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the rollout of the image generation feature to free users via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Until now, only subscribers of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans could utilize this tool, with free users limited to generating just three images per day. The immense popularity of the feature among premium users prompted OpenAI to expand access to all users, allowing them to create images without restrictions. Altman emphasized his desire for widespread usage, stating, “We want everyone to use it,” and dismissed any limitations based on user volume.

The rollout began on March 26, and by April 1, all ChatGPT users could access the image generation capabilities powered by OpenAI’s advanced GPT-4o model. This significant change marks a pivotal moment for OpenAI, as it aims to democratize access to its innovative tools.

Surge in User Registrations

The introduction of the image generation feature has led to a remarkable increase in new user registrations. Altman noted that the launch of ChatGPT 26 months ago was a viral phenomenon, adding one million users in just five days. However, the recent rollout has surpassed even that milestone, with one million new users signing up in just the last hour following the announcement. This surge highlights the growing interest in AI-driven tools and the potential for OpenAI to expand its user base significantly.

Despite the excitement, Altman acknowledged the challenges posed by the sudden influx of users. He urged users to moderate their image generation activities, humorously requesting, “Can y’all please chill on generating images? This is insane, our team needs sleep.”

Managing Increased Demand

To cope with the overwhelming demand for image generation, OpenAI implemented temporary rate limits on the feature. Altman explained that the surge in requests had placed immense pressure on the company’s graphics processing units (GPUs), leading to operational challenges. The company is actively working to ensure that its infrastructure can handle the increased load while maintaining service quality for all users.

As users explore the new image generation capabilities, OpenAI has provided a simple guide on how to create and modify images. Users can generate an initial image using a text prompt, adjust the prompt for modifications, and regenerate the image until they achieve their desired result. This user-friendly approach is expected to enhance engagement and creativity among ChatGPT users.
