NISD Launches Training Program for Geriatric Care Master Trainers
The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD) has recently concluded an Eleven-Day Training of Trainers (ToT) Programme aimed at enhancing the skills of Master Trainers in the geriatric care provider role. Held at NISD in Dwarka, New Delhi, from September 7 to 18, 2026, the program is a significant step towards improving the quality and standardization of geriatric care training across India.
Organized by the Senior Citizen Division of NISD, the initiative aims to develop a national pool of certified trainers who can effectively deliver high-quality training to caregivers for the elderly. A senior official from NISD noted that the training brought together participants from various medical and nursing backgrounds—including GNM, B.Sc. Nursing, M.Sc. Nursing, and MBBS—creating a collaborative learning environment focused on the health and well-being of senior citizens.
Training Objectives and Structure
During the program’s inauguration, Dr. H.C. Sridhara Channakeshava Ranga Reddy, Deputy Director of the Senior Citizen Division, highlighted the importance of the Training of Trainers initiative. He explained the critical roles and competencies expected of Master Trainers, emphasizing the need to integrate both Domain Skills, which pertain to professional competencies, and Platform Skills, focused on instructional delivery and engagement.
The training curriculum was comprehensive, covering a range of subjects pertinent to geriatric care. This included topics on age-related health changes, preventive healthcare, dementia care, and nutrition for seniors, among others. Participants were also educated on assessment requirements and certification processes to ensure consistent quality in delivering training.
Expert-Led, Interactive Learning
The participatory nature of the training involved expert-led sessions from a distinguished panel, including professionals experienced in geriatric care and related fields. Topics addressed ranged from mental health and first aid to yoga and caregiver self-care, enhancing both technical knowledge and practical skills among participants.
The training methodology included hands-on exercises, interactive discussions, and case-based learning, ensuring that trainers not only gained knowledge but also learned effective ways to impart that knowledge to future caregivers.
Certification and Future Goals
At the program’s conclusion, participants received certificates acknowledging their new skills and competencies. Feedback indicated high satisfaction with the program’s structure and relevance, highlighting its role in advancing professional standards in geriatric care.
The initiative reflects NISD’s commitment to providing dignified and high-quality care for senior citizens, contributing to a robust care ecosystem. The organization also emphasizes capacity building and skill development in this critical sector. An important development is NISD’s recognition as an Awarding Body by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), underlining its significant role in enhancing vocational education in social defense, particularly in geriatric care.
