NHRC Welcomes 80 Interns for Unique Winter Internship Programme
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has kicked off its exciting four-week Winter Internship Programme (WIP) for the year 2025. The programme runs from December 15, 2025, to January 9, 2026, in New Delhi and features 80 university-level interns hailing from a variety of academic disciplines. This select group was chosen from an impressive pool of 1,485 applicants from 19 different states and union territories across the nation.
Inauguration Ceremony Highlights
During the inauguration, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian highlighted the uniqueness of this in-person platform for peer learning in India’s diverse societal fabric. He encouraged the participants to absorb the values and insights they acquire throughout the programme, emphasizing the importance of applying these human rights principles in their everyday lives—at home, in the workplace, and within their communities.
Empathy and Engagement for Youth
In his keynote address, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal underscored the pivotal role that youth play in promoting human rights. He urged the interns to nurture a profound sense of empathy and compassion, aligning their actions with the values canonized in the Indian Constitution as well as the country’s rich civilizational heritage. Shri Lal encouraged the attendees to take full advantage of the internship experience to expand their perspectives and contribute toward crafting a more inclusive, equitable, and just society.
Internship Programme Overview
Providing an overview of the immersive experience, NHRC Joint Secretary Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakhchhuak detailed the programme’s structure. It includes interactive sessions with subject matter experts, collaborative research projects, book reviews, and declamation contests. These activities aim to deepen the interns’ understanding of pivotal human rights issues while fostering innovative approaches to tackle them.
NHRC Director Lt. Col. Virender Singh concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing enthusiasm for the capabilities and potential of the participating interns. As they embark on this unique journey, the NHRC hopes that these young minds will emerge as passionate advocates for human rights, equipped to make a significant impact in their respective communities and beyond.
