NHPC Boosts Renewable Energy with 23 New Hydropower Projects

NHPC Limited has officially commissioned a total of 23 hydropower projects, contributing to an impressive installed capacity of 7,771 MW. These milestones highlight the company’s commitment to renewable energy initiatives, with significant power generation achieved over recent years. The power output from these projects has been noteworthy, with figures of 29,894 million units generated in 2022-23, followed by 26,056 million units in 2023-24, and 25,194 million units in 2024-25. As of October 2025, the current year’s generation stands at 23,015 million units.

In addition to the completed projects, NHPC is actively developing eight more hydropower projects that will collectively deliver an additional generation capacity of 8,514 MW. These projects are situated in various states, including Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, and aim to enhance the country’s renewable energy landscape.

Community Engagement and Local Employment

NHPC Limited is also making strides in local economic development by providing job opportunities to residents, particularly those from Project Affected Families (PAFs), through various contractor partnerships. This initiative not only facilitates local income generation but also enhances the living standards of community members. Additionally, NHPC is promoting local entrepreneurship by offering bidding opportunities to residents and PAFs, thereby supporting the growth of local businesses.

Grievance Redressal Mechanism

To address any grievances related to these projects, the Government of India has established the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) portal. This platform ensures that grievances are processed and resolved in a timely manner, reinforcing the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Future Prospects of Hydropower in India

The under-construction hydropower projects encompass a range of capacities and anticipated commissioning dates. Notable projects include the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh with a capacity of 2,000 MW, expected to be operational by December 2026, and several significant projects in Jammu & Kashmir, such as the Ratle and PakalDul projects, scheduled for completion between 2026 and 2032. These ongoing endeavors reflect a concerted effort to harness hydroelectric potential, ensuring that India meets its growing energy demands sustainably.
