NHAI Launches Winter and Term Internship Programs for Students

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has opened applications for its upcoming Winter Internship Programme 2026-27 and Term Internship Programme 2027. These initiatives aim to provide students with practical experience within India’s extensive National Highway development ecosystem. The internships will allow participants to engage in live projects and assignments under the mentorship of seasoned NHAI professionals.

The Winter Internship Programme will run for one month from December 2026 to January 2027, while the six-month Term Internship Programme will take place from January to June 2027. To accommodate the different academic calendars of universities, students are encouraged to specify their preferred duration for the internship when applying through the NHAI Internship Portal.

NHAI has earmarked 541 internship positions for the Winter Internship Programme and 542 for the Term Internship Programme. Interns will be assigned to 125 ongoing National Highway projects and various divisions of NHAI and the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL). Under the supervision of NHAI officials, selected interns will gain hands-on experience in vital areas such as planning, construction, operation, maintenance, asset management, road safety, legal, finance, media, and other functions related to the National Highway sector.

To promote participation from top technical institutions, 100 seats are reserved for students from IITs and 150 for those from NITs.

Compensation and Application Process

Interns selected for these programs will receive a stipend of Rs. 20,000 per month, as per NHAI’s Internship Policy. They will also obtain a certificate upon successful completion of their internship. Interested students can apply through the NHAI Internship Portal at https://internshipsatnhai.digitalindiacorporation.in/. The application process involves online submission, verification by academic institutions, and selection by NHAI. Candidates are required to provide their academic details, preferred internship duration, and project location preferences. Only applications verified by institutions will be considered for selection.

Important Dates

The deadline for submitting applications is 20th October 2026, with institutions required to complete their recommendations by 10th November 2026. Detailed eligibility criteria, guidelines for application, and project information are available on the NHAI Internship Portal.

Enhancing Industry-Academia Collaboration

The response to previous internship programs has been overwhelmingly positive among students and academic institutions. In a bid to strengthen industry-academia collaboration, NHAI has urged universities and institutions to spread awareness about these internship opportunities, ensure timely application submissions, and nominate faculty coordinators to assist students throughout the process. The Winter Internship Programme 2026-27 and Term Internship Programme 2027 are expected to enhance skill development and provide students with invaluable practical experience in India’s expanding National Highway sector.
