New Research Clusters Unveiled at IIT Gandhinagar to Boost Innovation

At IIT Gandhinagar, Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh recently launched the initiative “Advancing Research & Innovation Towards Viksit Bharat,” highlighting the significance of scientific research in driving societal and economic advancements. Dr. Singh emphasized that true progress in science is not measured by publications alone but by how effectively research can be translated into real-world applications. To facilitate this, he stressed the need for enhanced collaboration among academia, industry, and government.

During the event, Dr. Singh inaugurated the Department of Science & Technology (DST) funded “Central Instrumentation Facility” and introduced three new research clusters: the Advanced Materials Research Cluster (AMRC), the Energy Research Cluster (ERC), and the Healthcare & MedTech Research Cluster (HMRC). These initiatives aim to convert innovative research into practical solutions for national development, with support from nearly 70 founding partner industries.

The Minister noted that addressing India’s pressing challenges, such as achieving materials self-reliance, transitioning to clean energy, and ensuring affordable healthcare, requires sustained efforts that extend beyond academic publications. He pointed out that the new research clusters embody a translational research model, facilitating the transition from scientific discovery to practical implementation and technology transfer.

Dr. Singh also highlighted the government’s mission to democratize access to research opportunities through policies like the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). This initiative is designed to extend financial and technical support to institutions outside the established centers of excellence, drawing on the diverse strengths of science, humanities, and social sciences.

Describing the current decade as a pivotal time for science and technology in India, Dr. Singh stated that the country is becoming a key player in emerging technologies. He mentioned initiatives like the National Quantum Mission and the IndiaAI Mission, which are creating new avenues for research and innovation.

While unveiling the Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF), he called shared scientific infrastructure a vital resource for innovation. Such facilities will provide researchers, startups, and industries with access to sophisticated tools that are often unattainable for individual institutions, thus supporting national priorities including the semiconductor mission.

During his visit, Dr. Singh engaged with startups and faculty at the IIT Gandhinagar Research Park, a collaboration hub designed to accelerate innovation and commercialization. The park currently houses over 20 companies and supports more than 30 startups, reflecting its role in fostering industry partnerships and technological advancements.

Advocating for the integration of industry feedback early in research programs, Dr. Singh emphasized that collaboration should commence during the conceptual development phase, ensuring alignment with societal needs and facilitating smoother technology transitions.

He also referred to the recently announced ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) initiative, reaffirming the government’s commitment to bolstering private-sector engagement in research initiatives. The Minister encouraged innovators and academic institutions to actively seek partnerships with industry and philanthropic organizations to bolster research funding.

Additionally, he met with NAMTECH representatives, commending their efforts to foster a talent pool well-prepared for emerging technological demands through industry-integrated learning models.

In closing, Dr. Singh released a publication showcasing IIT Gandhinagar’s top 25 research achievements of 2025, praising the institute’s commitment to interdisciplinary approaches that target real-world challenges and sustainable development. He expressed optimism that these new research clusters, enhanced scientific infrastructure, and industry-linked innovation ecosystems will significantly strengthen India’s research landscape, contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
