New Permanent Representative of Viet Nam Presents Credentials

The United Nations welcomed Do Hung Viet as the new Permanent Representative of Vietnam today. He presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres in a formal ceremony. With a robust background in international relations and extensive experience in diplomatic roles, Viet is poised to represent Vietnam on the global stage effectively.
Background and Education
Do Hung Viet was born on August 31, 1977, and is married with three daughters. His academic credentials include a Master of Public and International Law from the University of Melbourne, Australia, which he completed between 2006 and 2007. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelorโs degree in International Relations from the Institute for International Relations, now known as the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, from 1997 to 2000. Additionally, he participated in the United Nations Fellowship for Disarmament in 2005, further enhancing his expertise in international law and diplomacy.
Professional Experience
Since December 2022, Viet has served as the Deputy Foreign Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Vietnam. In this capacity, he also leads Vietnam’s ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) and holds the position of Vice Chair of the Vietnam National Mekong Committee. His responsibilities extend to being a member of the National Steering Committee for the formulation of the National Comprehensive Strategy for Preventing and Responding to Non-traditional Security Threats, as well as the National Action Programme on Zero Hunger. Notably, he served on the UN Secretary-Generalโs Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals in 2024.
Before his current role, Viet held various significant positions within the MOFA. From March 2018 to December 2022, he advanced from Deputy Director-General to Assistant Foreign Minister, overseeing the Department of International Organizations. He played a crucial role in managing Vietnamโs membership in the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term and contributed to the national efforts at COP26.
Previous Diplomatic Roles
Viet’s diplomatic career includes a series of important roles that have shaped his expertise in international relations. From December 2016 to March 2018, he served as Deputy Director-General and Special Assistant to the APEC 2017 Senior Officials’ Meeting Chair. His earlier experience includes serving as the Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations from July 2013 to November 2016. During this time, he was actively involved in various international negotiations, including serving as Vice Chair of the 53rd Session of the Commission for Social Development and as the G77 Coordinator for the Ministerial Declaration at the first High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
Viet’s career began in 2001, where he worked as an interpreter within the MOFA, gradually moving up through various roles, including desk officer and assistant director-general. His extensive experience in international organizations has equipped him with the skills necessary for his new position at the United Nations.
