New Delhi Unveils Handloom Haat: A Hub for Textiles and Culture
The vibrant textiles of India received a significant boost with the inauguration of Handloom Haat: The Handloom Experience Centre in New Delhi. Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, officially opened this unique facility at Janpath, which unites India’s rich handloom heritage with contemporary design, enterprise, and retail, all under one roof. The launch was marked by the unveiling of the Handloom Haat logo, in the presence of notable dignitaries including Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary of Textiles, and Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner of Handlooms.
Celebrating Handloom Craftsmanship
The inauguration showcased the talents of 24 award-winning weavers through an exhibition organized by the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC). Additionally, over 30 curated brands participated in the fifth edition of Weave The Future, which aims to promote sustainable and innovative approaches to textiles. This unique showcase brought together weavers, designers, researchers, and other stakeholders, highlighting the importance of indigenous fibers and responsible textile practices.
An Interactive Retail Experience
During his visit to the Handloom Haat, the Union Minister engaged with various retailers and artisans, expressing genuine interest in the diverse range of handloom traditions and the innovative products on display. He emphasized that Handloom Haat will enhance visibility and market opportunities for weavers and handloom enterprises, reflecting the entrepreneurial spirit of India’s handloom community.
A Journey Through India’s Textile Heritage
The Handloom Experience Centre is designed to offer visitors a multi-dimensional exploration of India’s handloom ecosystem. The ground floor features a temporary exhibition titled “Reimagining Odisha Weaves, Cloth, Craft, Creativity, Community,” run by Vriksh Designs. This exhibition showcases how contemporary designs can revitalize regional textile traditions through collaborations between designers and master weavers. It highlights unique Odisha weaving traditions such as Ganjam Bomkai and Dhalapathar Tapestry, along with innovative techniques in Ikat, Jaala, Phoda weaving, and natural dyes.
The first floor houses the Visvakarma Gallery, a permanent collection that celebrates rare textiles from the landmark Visvakarma exhibition series. This gallery honors the contributions of Sant Kabir and Padma Shri awardees who have significantly advanced the practice and appreciation of Indian handlooms.
The immersive experience continues on the second floor with the Design Conclave, inspired by India’s rich biodiversity and featuring motifs from nature—animal, bird, and floral patterns that resonate with the cultural heritage of Indian textiles.
