New Committee Formed to Boost Farmer Producer Organizations in Tamil Nadu
The Government of India is taking significant steps to enhance the effectiveness of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Tamil Nadu. Following Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s visit to Erode, a high-level committee has been established to assess the operational challenges faced by FPOs and recommend strategies for improvement.
Swift Action Post-Visit
During his recent trip to Erode, Chouhan engaged with farmers and stakeholders, discussing various challenges that FPOs encounter. These discussions prompted immediate action from the ministry, leading to the formation of the committee aimed at scrutinizing the performance of FPOs in the region. The objective is clear: to implement effective strategies that bolster the reach and impact of these organizations.
Comprehensive Committee Composition
The committee is composed of a diverse group of representatives, including members from NABARD, NAFED, SFAC-Tamil Nadu, and the ICAR–National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB). Additionally, it includes representatives from FPOs, NGOs, and officials from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. This varied composition ensures that the committee will conduct a holistic assessment of the FPOs, addressing key issues such as governance, management practices, market operations, and sustainability.
Focus Areas and Recommendations
One of the committee’s primary tasks is to evaluate critical elements affecting FPOs. This includes exploring technical support, marketing challenges, and capacity-building needs. Furthermore, the committee will develop recommendations to enhance FPO operations through improved business models, better technical support, and strengthened market connections. Special emphasis will be placed on crops vital to Tamil Nadu’s economy, such as banana, turmeric, coconut, and tapioca.
Grounded Recommendations through Field Visits
To ensure that the recommendations reflect real-world conditions, the committee plans to conduct field visits and engage with various stakeholders, including farmers and market agents. The committee will also gather insights from both Central and State Government departments, ICAR institutes, and relevant private sector entities.
Timeline and Support Structure
The committee is expected to deliver its final report to the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare within two months. The ICAR–National Research Centre for Banana in Tiruchirappalli, along with KVKs from ICAR–ATARI in Hyderabad, will provide logistical and administrative support throughout this process.
This initiative is a testament to the Government of India’s commitment to fostering farmer-centric policies. Under the leadership of Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the focus remains on strengthening and empowering FPOs, thereby enhancing farmers’ incomes and promoting value addition in Tamil Nadu’s agricultural landscape.
