NCR Implements Stage-I Measures to Combat Air Quality Crisis

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region (NCR) in direct response to alarming air quality levels in Delhi. With the city’s daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 226, placing it squarely in the ‘Poor’ category, urgent measures have been deemed necessary to counteract rising pollution levels.

This decision followed a thorough evaluation by the CAQM Sub-Committee, which convened recently to assess the troubling air quality situation in Delhi and its neighboring areas. The analysis considered current weather conditions and future forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), revealing a concerning upward trend in AQI due to adverse meteorological factors. Projections indicate that the poor air quality is expected to persist for at least the next two days.

Immediate Actions Under Stage-I

In light of the deteriorating air quality, the Sub-Committee has set in motion the implementation of all 31 actions outlined in Stage-I of the GRAP. These actions aim to mitigate the effects of pollution and improve air quality across the NCR. Key measures include:

  • Enhancing dust control systems in construction activities.
  • Monitoring compliance with regulations regarding construction and demolition waste management.
  • Strict management of municipal solid waste disposal.
  • Increasing the use of anti-smog guns at construction sites.
  • Prohibiting open burning of waste and firm enforcement against violations.
  • Ensuring vehicles adhere to pollution under control (PUC) norms and taking action against visibly emitting vehicles.
  • Encouraging public transport by introducing more CNG and electric buses.

The authorities are also focusing on enhanced communication strategies. Citizens will be informed about air pollution levels and encouraged to report violations through mobile apps and social media platforms. The aim is to foster community involvement in pollution reduction efforts.

Ongoing Monitoring and Community Engagement

Officials will closely monitor the air quality and conduct regular evaluations to determine the necessity for additional measures, based on ongoing AQI levels and weather forecasts. The CAQM has urged citizens to actively participate in the implementation of these measures and comply with guidelines laid out in the Citizen Charter of Stage-I of the GRAP.

The Sub-Committee emphasizes that the ongoing cooperation of the public is critical in combating air pollution and improving air quality in the NCR. For detailed information on the GRAP schedule and measures, residents can visit the CAQM’s official website.
