NCB Achieves 73 Drug Convictions in First Quarter of 2026

In a significant victory against drug trafficking, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has successfully secured the conviction of 73 drug offenders within the first three months of 2026. This achievement has been lauded by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to combating drug-related crimes and protecting the youth of the nation.

In a statement posted on X, Amit Shah expressed his congratulations to the NCB for this accomplishment, highlighting the Modi government’s rigorous approach in dismantling drug cartels and ensuring strong penalties for offenders. He stated, “To protect our youth from the scourge of drugs, the Modi govt is ruthlessly demolishing drug cartels and is also ensuring their conviction,” underscoring the determination to eliminate every avenue available to drug traffickers.

Record Conviction Rate

During the period from January to March 2026, the NCB’s focused and strategic monitoring of trials resulted in conviction in 35 cases. Notably, four convicted individuals received maximum sentences of 20 years each, while an additional 54 offenders were sentenced to 10 years or more. The total financial penalty imposed on the convicted amounted to Rs. 1.22 crore.

Key Convictions

The NCB’s efforts included the crucial conviction of individuals involved in significant international heroin smuggling operations. These cases included incidents where the Bureau seized 2.757 kg of heroin at Ahmedabad Airport in 2021, and another 4.235 kg at the Fazilka Indo-Pak border in 2022. The traffickers involved in these operations were each handed down sentences of 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Additionally, a notable case involved the diversion of pseudoephedrine, a controlled substance, linked to M/s Alps Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. from Sonipat, Haryana. Three individuals connected to this case, including the company’s director, received sentences of seven years in rigorous imprisonment, each also facing fines of Rs. 1.5 lakh. The company itself was penalized similarly, and its permission to manufacture pseudoephedrine was subsequently revoked by the NCB.

Collaboration for Effective Prosecution

In a bid to further enhance their endeavors against drug trafficking, the NCB has called upon other Central and State agencies to help identify key under-trial cases associated with drug kingpins. This collaborative approach is crucial for dismantling drug cartels effectively. The initiative also aligns with the government’s strict zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring a safer environment for all citizens.
