NBA Launches New Internship Programme to Cultivate Biodiversity Ambassadors

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has unveiled an exciting short-term Internship Programme aimed at students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This initiative, which lasts up to three months, offers participants valuable project-based learning through direct involvement in NBA programs.

The primary objective of the programme is to empower young individuals by enhancing their environmental knowledge, boosting their skills, and improving their future job prospects in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management. Furthermore, it seeks to nurture participants into ambassadors for biodiversity.

Ongoing Year-Long Biodiversity Internships

In addition to the short-term programme, the NBA also runs the Biodiversity Samrakshan Internship Programme (BSIP), which lasts for one year, with the option to extend for an additional two years. The sixth cycle of BSIP has recently selected 24 interns who will be positioned in various State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs) and Union Territory Biodiversity Councils (UTBCs) for hands-on experience in biodiversity conservation. These interns will aid SBBs and UTBCs in their vital operations.

Throughout the one-year internship, participants assigned to SBBs and UTBCs will engage in various activities including attending meetings, organizing programs, conducting field studies, and assisting with the routine operations of these councils. The NBA encourages interns who wish to deepen their expertise in this field by offering the opportunity to continue their internship for two additional years.

Collaboration for a Greener Future

The BSIP, initiated in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to cultivate a skilled group of young professionals through practical field engagement. Interns are selected through a competitive, nationwide process and placed across various states and Union Territories to bolster local biodiversity conservation efforts.

The first cycle of BSIP commenced in 2019-20, coinciding with the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, 2020, during an inauguration led by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Currently, the NBA allocates approximately ₹1 crore to support these internships, thereby contributing to nation-building and the development of committed biodiversity advocates for the future.
