Navigating Grievance Redressal in India’s Growing Insurance Sector

As the adoption of insurance rises across India, understanding the grievance redressal mechanisms is becoming essential for policyholders. With financial security at stake, it’s important for consumers to familiarize themselves with the regulated channels for addressing complaints and to stay informed about the recent metrics regarding customer complaints in the insurance industry.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has established a structured process aimed at resolving issues faced by policyholders in a timely manner. Customers who encounter problems such as claim rejections, delays, or mis-selling are encouraged to follow a clear escalation pathway.

Insurer Level Redressal

Initially, complaints should be directed to the Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO) designated by the insurance company. Each insurer is required to appoint a Grievance Redressal Officer to oversee customer grievances. In addition, every insurer must establish a Policyholder Protection, Grievance Redressal, and Claims Monitoring Committee (PPGR & CM Committee) at the board level to ensure grievances are handled efficiently.

Any complaint lodged—whether through a digital platform, physical correspondence, or by calling the insurance call center—must be recorded in the insurer’s Complaints Management System (CMS). The CMS, alongside the Bima Bharosa Portal, helps streamline the grievance handling process. Insurers are instructed to acknowledge complaints immediately and are obligated to provide a resolution within 14 days.

Utilizing the Bima Bharosa Portal

The Bima Bharosa Portal, managed by IRDAI, allows policyholders to register and monitor their complaints against insurers. Customers must first contact the insurer’s Grievance Redressal Cell for resolution. If a satisfactory resolution is not provided within a reasonable timeframe, or if they are unhappy with the response, policyholders can escalate the issue to IRDAI’s Grievance Redressal Cell.

Policyholders can access the IRDAI Bima Bharosa Portal online at https://bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in/. Additionally, complaints can be filed through a toll-free helpline at 155255 or 1800-4254-732, or via email at [email protected]. Physical letters and email complaints are also logged into the Bima Bharosa Portal. Notably, IRDAI’s call center offers multi-lingual assistance and operates in twelve languages, making it easier for all citizens to seek help.
