The findings from the INST research team, published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, reveal significant advancements in understanding how nano-formulated melatonin can combat PD. The study showed that nano-melatonin effectively improved mitophagy, leading to the removal of damaged mitochondria and promoting mitochondrial biogenesis. This is particularly crucial in counteracting toxicity induced by substances like rotenone, which is often used in PD research.
Moreover, the research highlighted the role of BMI1, an epigenetic regulator, in the process. The overexpression of BMI1 following treatment with nano-melatonin suggests a pathway through which melatonin can enhance mitophagy and reduce oxidative stress. This discovery not only provides insight into the molecular mechanisms at play but also positions melatonin as a potential therapeutic candidate for PD and possibly other diseases where mitophagy is disrupted.
