Mumbai International Film Festival Kicks Off with Star-Studded Ceremony
Mumbai witnessed a dazzling start to the 19th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) on June 15, 2026. The festival, recognized as India’s premier event focused on documentary, short fiction, animation, and AI-generated films, kicked off with a grand inaugural ceremony held at Ravindra Natya Mandir. Organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, MIFF proudly stands as South Asia’s oldest and largest film festival dedicated to non-feature cinema.
This year, MIFF has blossomed into a globally respected platform for filmmakers and creatives, fostering dynamic discussions through compelling storytelling and innovative cinematic expressions. The festival has gathered renowned filmmakers, industry experts, budding talent, and passionate cinema lovers from across India and the globe, showcasing outstanding works in various genres including documentaries and animation.
A Red Carpet Affair
The opening day was marked by an extravagant red carpet event, where distinguished guests, including eminent personalities from the film and cultural sectors, made their way to the inaugural ceremony. Notable attendees included Shri Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and acclaimed filmmaker Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi.
Among the dignitaries were Shri Ashish Shelar, the Minister of Cultural Affairs and IT of Maharashtra, and Dr. Kiran Kulkarni, Secretary of the Marathi Bhasha Department. They joined other prominent figures such as Dr. L. Murugan, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, and Shri G. Krishnakumar, the NFDC Chairman, who also made an appearance on the red carpet.
Celebrating the Art of Film
Legendary filmmaker Shri Kiran Shantaram, the son of V. Shantaram, captured the attention of the crowd during the opening festivities, alongside notable filmmaker Shri Ashutosh Gowariker. The ceremony also featured renowned film actors including Shri Jaideep Ahlawat and actress Ms. Sheena Chohan, both of whom attended to lend their support to this significant cultural event.
The gathering was a remarkable sight, with discussions around the evolving landscape of filmmaking and the role of innovations like AI in creative processes. The Director General of PIB Mumbai, Smt. Smita Vats Sharma, engaged with attendees, highlighting the festival’s importance in nurturing creative talents and promoting independent cinema.
