Mumbai International Film Festival 2026 Kicks Off with Thought-Provoking Films

Mumbai welcomed the 19th edition of the International Film Festival (MIFF) today, showcasing three powerful films that delve into the themes of climate change, memory, and the complexities of technology. The festival, recognized as India’s premier event for non-feature cinema, spans from June 15 to June 21, 2026. The opening ceremony was followed by screenings of the films ‘Time and Water’, ‘AGAPITO’, and ‘Good Luck to You All’ at the iconic Ravindra Natya Mandir.

A Meditation on Time, Ice, and Memory: Time and Water

Opening the festival was ‘Time and Water’, a poignant documentary directed by Sara Dosa. The film, presented by National Geographic Documentary Films and Sandbox Films in collaboration with the Ninmah Foundation, features Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason. It transforms personal and historical records into a time capsule, addressing the profound impact of melting glaciers and personal loss. Dosa, known for her Oscar-nominated work, invites viewers to contemplate intergenerational responsibility and ecological awareness through her reflective storytelling.

Quiet Anticipation in a Forgotten Space: AGAPITO

Next, the festival showcased ‘AGAPITO’, a short film co-directed by Arvin Belarmino and Kyla Romero. Set in a dimly lit bowling alley, the film tells the story of Mira, the manager, as she completes her routines on the final day of the month while awaiting a significant visitor. This Filipino film beautifully captures the tension between the mundane and the emotional, offering viewers an intimate glimpse into the layers of longing and human connection.

A Whimsical Warning from the Future: Good Luck to You All

Rounding out the trio is the animated short film ‘Good Luck to You All’, directed by Canadian Cordell Barker. With its playful yet unsettling narrative, the film follows a young girl at play, blissfully unaware of the uncertain future humanity faces. Barker’s work, rich in humor and underlying caution, prompts reflections on artificial intelligence and the unpredictable tides of technological advancement, blending childhood innocence with philosophical questions.

The diverse selections of these opening films set a profound and engaging tone for the festival, highlighting environmental issues, human experiences, and the complexities of modern life.

The 19th MIFF: A Celebration of Non-Feature Cinema

The Mumbai International Film Festival, established in 1990 and organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, is the oldest and largest festival in South Asia dedicated to non-feature cinema. This year, MIFF features a carefully curated lineup including 1,459 entries from 47 countries, showcasing films in over 42 Indian languages and more than 30 international languages.

With an array of documentaries, short fiction films, animations, debut works, and student films on display, MIFF 2026 promises an enriching cinematic experience. Additionally, it will host the second edition of Doc Bazaar alongside engaging masterclasses and industry forums, contributing to a vibrant cultural exchange.

The festival invites all to celebrate the art of storytelling, where remarkable films and creative minds converge, fostering a lasting appreciation for documentary, animation, and short fiction filmmaking.
