MoSPI Revises National Accounts with New Data Sources and Methodology
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is undertaking a major revision of the national accounts’ base year to enhance the accuracy of economic measurements. An Advisory Committee on National Account Statistics (ACNAS), led by Professor B.N. Goldar, has been established to guide MoSPI on integrating new data sources and refining the methodologies used in compiling national account statistics. This initiative aims to improve economic analysis and influence policy formulation.
For the upcoming series, FY 2022-23 has been selected as the base year, with new estimates expected to be unveiled on February 27, 2026. To keep stakeholders informed about the proposed changes in the new series, the Ministry plans to release several discussion papers outlining the modifications in national accounts compilation.
Discussion Papers to Provide Insights
The first discussion paper, which covers changes in the compilation of aggregates based on the production/income approach, was published on November 21, 2025. Following that, the second discussion paper was released on December 16, 2025, detailing proposed improvements in the compilation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the expenditure approach. Both documents are available on MoSPI’s official website for public access and feedback.
The latest, third discussion paper emphasizes changes in the methodology of the quarterly GDP series and sub-national accounts. This paper also aims to engage users by soliciting their input and suggestions to refine the national accounts data further.
