MoSPI Enhances Household Surveys for Accurate Data Collection
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is stepping up its efforts to ensure unbiased coverage in household surveys. By employing probability-based scientific selection methods, the ministry has successfully gathered data that represents all states and Union Territories, spanning both rural and urban areas. This meticulous approach guarantees uniformity and completeness in the survey outcomes.
Recent Surveys and Their Findings
In a bid to capture essential data on household consumption, MoSPI conducted two consecutive Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys (HCES) during the periods of August 2022 to July 2023 and August 2023 to July 2024. Detailed findings from these surveys are set to be published in July 2024 and January 2025, respectively. These surveys are vital for understanding the spending behaviors and priorities of households across the nation.
Focus on Education Expenditure
Further expanding its survey capabilities, MoSPI has undertaken a Comprehensive Modular Survey (CMS) on education, following a request from the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) under the Ministry of Education. Conducted between April and June 2025, the survey aims to collect data on household expenditures related to school education. In addition, it seeks to estimate spending on private tutoring and coaching for students currently enrolled in educational institutions. The final report of this survey is expected to be released in August 2025.
Integration of Technology in Surveys
MoSPI is also exploring the integration of new technologies and the upgrading of existing tools to enhance the relevance and applicability of its surveys. One significant initiative is the Urban Frame Survey (UFS), conducted every five years to establish and maintain a framework of compact urban geographical units. These units serve as a sampling frame within the urban sector, primarily for large-scale socio-economic surveys. The latest phase of UFS, initiated in 2017 and continuing through 2022, is being executed in a digital format utilizing advanced Geo ICT tools. This initiative employs improved versions of mobile, desktop, and web-based GIS solutions developed on the Bhuvan platform in collaboration with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC).
Official Statements
This comprehensive overview was presented by Rao Inderjit Singh, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation, as well as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Planning and the Minister of State for Culture, during a session in the Rajya Sabha. The efforts by MoSPI highlight the government’s commitment to producing accurate, reliable, and comprehensive data that will support informed decision-making and policy development.
