Monsoon Uncertainty Impacts Corporate Gains from Declining Oil Prices
MUMBAI: Oil prices have dropped significantly, prompting some analysts to revise India’s headline inflation forecast for the fiscal year. However, uncertainty surrounding the monsoon season is leading consumer firms to adjust their growth expectations. Companies with diverse product portfolios are banking on this strategy to mitigate potential losses from a projected slowdown in rural consumption.
Rural India accounted for nearly 60% of the country’s overall consumption growth in 2022-2023, according to Dharmakirti Joshi, chief economist at Crisil. The delayed arrival of this year’s monsoons has resulted in rainfall levels being 43% below normal, which threatens kharif crop sowing. In Mumbai, where monsoons typically begin in late June, the onset has been recorded as the second-most delayed, prompting authorities to impose water supply cuts to commercial establishments.
Consumer behavior in rural areas is expected to shift as uncertainty persists. Mayank Shah, chief marketing officer at Parle Products, noted that rural consumers may adopt a cautious approach to non-essential spending until there is more clarity on rainfall distribution and crop progress. Piruz Khambatta, chairman of Rasna Group, indicated that any pressure on farm output could negatively impact rural consumption, affecting demand for fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG).
Despite these challenges, historical trends suggest that rural consumption tends to rebound when monsoon conditions improve. Kaleeswaran Arunachalam, group CFO of Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals, emphasized this resilience. Meanwhile, the development of El Niño conditions could further disrupt rural demand, potentially impacting revenues across various sectors. Icra reported that corporate revenue growth was healthy in Q4FY26, but growth rates may vary significantly depending on monsoon performance, as noted by Jyotiroop Barua, business head of confectionery at DS Group.
