Minister Reviews Air Quality Action Plans for Ghaziabad and Noida
In a significant move to combat air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR), Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, presided over a pivotal meeting today focused on the action plans specific to Ghaziabad and Noida. This marks the first of several high-level reviews aimed at assessing city-specific strategies to improve air quality, which will lead to a comprehensive state-level review shortly.
The meeting’s agenda centered on evaluating the progress of initiatives designed to mitigate pollution in these two cities. Senior officials provided detailed presentations on their action plans, covering crucial aspects such as traffic management, industrial compliance with pollution norms, the status of electric vehicle (EV) fleets, and the enhancement of public transport systems.

During the meeting, the Ministry outlined specific parameters for review. These included the implementation of smart traffic management systems to reduce vehicular emissions, measures for managing construction and demolition waste, and initiatives for greening public spaces. Furthermore, the Minister emphasized the importance of deploying mechanical road sweeping machines and anti-smog technology to enhance cleanliness.
Shri Yadav also sought updates from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on the status of Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) in industrial units. He reiterated the critical deadline of December 31, 2025, for all installations, urging stringent actions against non-compliant facilities. Inspectors were directed to evaluate polluting industries, particularly those located in peri-urban areas, to enforce compliance effectively.

Addressing the collaborative efforts needed, the Minister called for the Commission for Air Quality Management in Delhi-NCR (CAQM) to refine the parameters of city action plans. He proposed a comprehensive approach to funding that would prioritize better-performing cities under the National Clean Air Programme. Stressing community involvement, he invited public representatives to engage more actively in pollution control measures and greening initiatives, transforming them into a collective movement.
Innovative Suggestions for Improvement
Shri Yadav recommended that municipal authorities collaborate with forest departments to plant indigenous plant species that withstand heat and require less water. He proposed developing integrated waste management strategies that involve multiple government and municipal agencies to avoid redundant efforts. Additionally, the creation of a Standard Operating Procedure for utilizing urban open spaces for greening was also suggested.

The Minister recommended conducting studies to identify major traffic routes within Delhi-NCR to provide better public transport options and future-proof municipal action plans against growing waste volumes.
