Middle East Conflict and Oil Prices to Influence Markets During Holiday-Shortened Week; Focus on Rupee and FII Flows
Developments in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and global economic indicators are set to significantly influence the Indian stock markets in the upcoming holiday-shortened week. Analysts suggest that investors will closely monitor the rupee’s performance against the US dollar and the trading activities of foreign institutional investors. Amid persistent geopolitical uncertainties, market sentiment is expected to remain fragile, especially with domestic equity markets observing closures for Shri Mahavir Jayanti and Good Friday.
Geopolitical Tensions and Oil Prices
Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking Ltd, emphasized that global macroeconomic factors will play a crucial role in determining market trends in the coming days. He noted that the direction of crude oil prices and the progress of ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran will be pivotal in shaping investor sentiment. Mishra highlighted that a stable rupee is essential for reviving foreign institutional investments. On the domestic front, key economic indicators, such as industrial production data for February and the HSBC Manufacturing PMI for March, are anticipated to provide insights into economic momentum and fiscal health. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which escalated on February 28, has already led to significant foreign investor withdrawals, totaling approximately Rs 1.14 lakh crore (around $12.3 billion) this month.
Market Volatility Ahead
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, indicated that the markets are likely to remain highly sensitive to any changes in the geopolitical landscape. He stated that developments in the Middle East could swiftly alter market sentiment, particularly through their effects on crude oil prices. Elevated oil prices are expected to exert continued pressure on the markets, while any potential pullback could lead to short-covering and support a rebound. Hariprasad K, a research analyst and founder of Livelong Wealth, echoed this sentiment, asserting that the week ahead will be largely influenced by global factors, including crude oil prices, currency fluctuations, and geopolitical developments. Last week, the BSE Sensex experienced a decline of 949.74 points, or 1.27 percent, while the NSE Nifty fell by 294.9 points, reflecting the impact of global volatility.
Significant Losses in Market Valuation
The broader market sentiment remained weak last week, with the combined market valuation of seven of the top ten most valued firms decreasing by Rs 1.75 lakh crore. Reliance Industries faced the most significant loss, with a market capitalization drop of Rs 89,720.3 crore. Other major firms, including HDFC Bank and State Bank of India, also experienced substantial declines, losing Rs 37,248.59 crore and Rs 35,399.42 crore, respectively. Despite the downturn, companies like Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finance, and Infosys managed to post gains in market valuation. Mishra noted that last week’s trading was marked by sharp fluctuations, initially driven by concerns over energy supply disruptions and a record-low rupee, followed by a mid-week recovery fueled by hopes of easing tensions between the US and Iran. However, renewed selling pressure on Friday ultimately erased those gains.
