Mexican Court Sentences Woman to 20 Years for the Murder of Australian Surfer Brothers
A 23-year-old woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in the brutal murders of three tourists during a carjacking in Mexico last year. Ari Gisell pleaded guilty to instigating the violent attack on Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad, who went missing while on a surfing trip in Baja California in April 2024. Their bodies were later discovered in a well, each suffering from gunshot wounds to the head.
The Crime and Its Aftermath
Ari Gisell’s role in the crime began when she expressed interest in the tires of the tourists’ vehicle. She instructed her then-boyfriend, Jesús Gerardo, to acquire “a good phone and good tires for my pickup truck.” Following her directive, Gerardo and two accomplices tracked the tourists to their campsite, where they robbed and subsequently murdered them. The ongoing legal proceedings against Gerardo and his associates, Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús, are still pending in the courts.
Reports indicate that Jesús Gerardo and Irineo Francisco have connections to the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel, which was previously led by the infamous Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Due to these affiliations, both men are currently incarcerated in El Hongo, a maximum-security prison in Baja California, while Ángel Jesús is held in a separate facility in Ensenada. Despite the suspects’ links to organized crime, prosecutors do not believe the murders were connected to cartel activities.
Emotional Testimonies from Victims’ Families
During the court hearing, family members of the victims appeared via video conference to share their grief. Debra Robinson, the mother of Jake and Callum, expressed her heartbreak, stating, “We dreamed of seeing them grow older, of having children. That’s all taken now.” Callum Robinson, 33, was a member of Australia’s national lacrosse team and lived in San Diego, while his brother Jake, 30, had traveled from Australia to visit him. Jake was set to begin a new job as a doctor upon his return.
Carter Rhoad, 30, was also a San Diego resident and worked in technology services. He was engaged and just months away from marrying his fiancée, Natalie Wiertz, who described her life as a “nightmare” following his death. The emotional testimonies highlighted the profound impact of the tragedy on the families, who continue to grapple with their loss.
Ari Gisell’s Apology in Court
In a tearful moment during the proceedings, Ari Gisell offered an apology to the victims’ families, acknowledging that her words could not bring them peace. “Nothing I can say will compensate you or give you peace,” she stated. Gisell, a single mother, expressed her desire to become a better person and conveyed her sorrow for the families’ losses. Her plea for forgiveness underscores the complexity of the case and the deep emotional scars left by the tragic events.
