Life and Career
Born to Graham Gladwell, a mathematics and engineering professor, and Joyce Gladwell, a Jamaican-born psychotherapist, Malcolm developed an early passion for the written word in a Mennonite household without television. When he was six, his family relocated to Elmira, Ontario, Canada, where he spent his formative years surrounded by a literary environment. Both his parents were published authors, and young Malcolm inherited their intellectual curiosity. At age sixteen, he won a writing competition with a unique interview with God, foreshadowing his later success as a writer.
Gladwell excelled academically and athletically during his high school years, becoming an exceptional middle-distance runner who won the 1500-meter title at the 1978 Ontario High School 14-year-old championships. He graduated from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1984 with a degree in history. After initially struggling to find his path—facing rejection from advertising agencies—Gladwell pursued journalism, working as a reporter for the Washington Post from 1987 to 1996, where he covered business and science and eventually became the newspaper’s New York City bureau chief.
Since 1996, Gladwell has been a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, a position that provided the platform for his groundbreaking books. His first major work, “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference” (2000), explored how social epidemics arise from specific contextual factors and key influencers. This was followed by “Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking” (2005), which examined snap decisions and unconscious bias, inspired partly by his own experience of increased police stops after adopting an Afro hairstyle. His subsequent bestsellers include “Outliers: The Story of Success” (2008), “David and Goliath” (2013), and “Talking to Strangers” (2019).
Gladwell’s writings typically delve into unexpected implications of social science research, frequently incorporating academic studies into engaging narratives for general audiences. He hosts the successful podcast “Revisionist History” and is co-founder of Pushkin Industries, his podcast company.
Awards and Legacy
Gladwell was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2011, one of the country’s highest civilian honors. He received the American Sociological Association’s Award for Excellence in the Reporting of Social Issues in 2007, and has been honored with honorary degrees from both the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto.
