Lok Sabha Speaker Visits National Assembly of Barbados

On the sidelines of the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Bridgetown, Barbados, the Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD), led by Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, visited the National Assembly of Barbados. The delegation was warmly received by H.E. Mr. Arthur Holder, Speaker of the House of Assembly. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation, exchanging democratic values, and strengthening partnerships on global platforms between India and Barbados.
Strengthening Ties Through Historic Symbols
During the visit, Shri Birla had the opportunity to view the historic Speaker’s chair in the Barbados Parliament, a gift from India in 1966 to commemorate Barbados’ independence. This chair, crafted from Indian teakwood and hand-carved by twelve artisans over nearly a year, symbolizes the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. The inscription on the chair reads, “From the People of India to the People of Barbados,” highlighting the enduring friendship and cooperation that exists between India and Barbados. Shri Birla emphasized that the shared democratic traditions and parliamentary systems of both countries serve to strengthen their relationship. He described this heritage as a living example of India-Barbados friendship and expressed optimism about exploring new avenues for collaboration in education, culture, renewable energy, and parliamentary cooperation.
Engagement with the Indian Diaspora
Shri Birla also engaged with members of the Indian Diaspora during his visit. He acknowledged their hard work and dedication, which have earned them a strong reputation globally. The Indian community in Barbados celebrates various festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Navratri, which he noted help to strengthen community bonds. He remarked that the teachings from the Ramayana and Mahabharata continue to guide the Indian Diaspora, emphasizing values of righteousness, truth, and duty. Shri Birla encouraged the community to maintain a positive image of India and to pass on their cultural heritage, including languages and traditions, to future generations.
Bilateral Meetings at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference
On the sidelines of the conference, Shri Birla held several bilateral meetings with his counterparts from various countries. In a meeting with Her Excellency Ms. Sue Lines, President of the Australian Senate, both leaders discussed the growing collaboration between India and Australia, which has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership since 2020. They highlighted cooperation in key sectors such as defense, trade, renewable energy, and science and technology. Shri Birla also invited Ms. Lines to the upcoming 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) scheduled for January 2026 in New Delhi.
In discussions with H.E. Mr. Arthur Holder, the focus was on enhancing cooperation at multilateral platforms like the United Nations and CARICOM.
