Launch of CBDC-Based Direct Benefit Transfer System in Chandigarh
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, introduced a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system during a significant event held at the Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh. The launch was presided over by Punjab Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria and attended by notable guests including Union Minister for Education, Shri Pralhad Joshi, and Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution, Smt. Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya. Shri Chouhan emphasized that this initiative represents a pivotal move toward enhancing transparency, security, and timeliness within the Public Distribution System (PDS).
Enhancing Transparency in Benefits Delivery
Shri Chouhan articulated how the CBDC-based DBT system would facilitate direct, secure payments to beneficiaries for ration and food grains. This pilot program, launched in Chandigarh, is meant to serve as a template for nationwide implementation. To prevent misuse, safeguards have been put in place to ensure funds are exclusively used for purchasing essential food items. Furthermore, beneficiaries will enjoy the flexibility to select from a range of commodities, including pulses, alongside traditional staples like wheat and rice. Praising the initiative, Shri Chouhan described it as a breakthrough in leveraging technology for social welfare.
Firm Commitment to Agricultural Interests
Shri Chouhan made it clear that the government remains steadfast in prioritizing the interests of farmers and the impoverished. He noted the importance of ensuring that agreements with other nations benefit farmers while supporting national and public interests. Referencing India’s robust grain stocks, he conveyed reassurance that the nation can fulfill domestic needs while also engaging in exports when appropriate. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, he affirmed that the transparent distribution of benefits like the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi will continue to be a top priority.

During the launch event, Shri Chouhan expressed strong disapproval of the disruptions occurring in Parliament, asserting that such behaviors tarnish the dignity of democracy. He stressed the importance of maintaining decorum in democratic institutions and emphasized that while robust debate is necessary, disruptions are unacceptable.

The Union Minister acknowledged the significance of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which aims to provide free food grains to over 800 million citizens. He noted that this program not only addresses hunger but also enables families to allocate their resources toward crucial aspects like children’s education. Shri Chouhan reiterated the government’s mission to ensure that food insecurity is eliminated.

In a heartfelt address, Shri Chouhan honored freedom fighters and encouraged citizens to commit to national service, urging active participation in the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign. He emphasized that realizing the aspirations of past martyrs requires dedicated and honest contributions towards national development, along with eco-friendly initiatives such as tree planting.
