Jal Jeevan Mission Marks 7 Years of Progress Toward Rural Water Security
As India approaches its 80th Independence Day, the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), the country’s premier rural drinking water initiative, is celebrating seven years of significant progress in enhancing the quality of life for rural households. Initiated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019, the mission strives to ensure safe and reliable drinking water supply to every rural home through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC).
At the launch of the mission, only 3.23 crore rural households, about 16.72% of the total, had access to tap water. Today, this number has soared to over 15.91 crore, meaning that approximately 82.24% of rural households now enjoy tap water in their homes. This represents an increase of more than 12.68 crore rural households provided with reliable water connections since the mission’s inception.
Major Achievements in Rural Water Supply
An impressive milestone has been reached with 188 districts, 1,090 blocks, 1.01 lakh Gram Panchayats, and 2.04 lakh villages recognized as Har Ghar Jal (HGJ). Additionally, 9.34 lakh schools and 9.73 lakh Anganwadi centres now have drinking water tap connections, evidencing the widespread impact of the mission. This comprehensive data is accessible in real-time through the Jal Jeevan Mission-Integrated Management Information System (JJM-IMIS) portal.
A Historical Context of Rural Water Supply in India
The commitment to rural drinking water supply has been a priority for the nation since its independence. Initiatives such as the National Water Supply Programme, Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme, and Swajaldhara set the stage for expanding access to safe drinking water. The Jal Jeevan Mission builds upon these efforts by shifting focus from community-level access to individual household connections, ensuring a consistent quantity and quality of water for daily use.
This mission has also liberated countless women and girls from the labor of fetching water over long distances, allowing them to dedicate time to education, jobs, and other productive endeavors. The presence of tap water at home has improved health, hygiene, and dignity, ultimately enhancing overall quality of life in rural areas. The mission emphasizes community involvement, empowering local institutions such as Gram Panchayats, Village Water and Sanitation Committees, and Self-Help Groups to manage water resources effectively.
Looking Forward: The Future of Jal Jeevan Mission
With the government’s commitment to extend the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028, the initiative is transforming from merely an infrastructure project into a movement for sustainable water security. New strategies include groundwater recharge, rainwater harvesting, and long-term water security planning, ensuring that rural communities remain engaged in water management.
The Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari initiative encourages community participation in conservation practices, including rainwater harvesting. The Government is also prioritizing rigorous water quality monitoring to ensure safe drinking water through trained community members and testing facilities.
As the Jal Jeevan Mission enters its eighth year, the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation within the Ministry of Jal Shakti reaffirms its dedication to providing every rural household with safe drinking water consistently. The collaborative endeavors of states, local authorities, and community members will continue to support the vision of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ and advance water security for every rural household in the country.
