Jal Jeevan Mission Achieves Major Milestone in Rural Water Supply
Since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in August 2019, the Government of India has made significant strides towards ensuring that every rural household has access to safe drinking water through tap connections. This ambitious initiative aims to provide a reliable and long-term water supply, benefiting countless communities across the nation.
When the mission began, only 3.23 crore rural households, or 16.7%, reported having tap water connections. However, recent updates from States and Union Territories (UTs) show that by March 3, 2026, more than 12.58 crore additional households have gained access to tap water. As a result, approximately 15.82 crore, or 81.71%, of the nearly 19.36 crore rural households in India now enjoy this essential service.

State Responsibilities and Support
Drinking water supply is primarily the responsibility of state governments. Under the JJM framework, states are tasked with planning, approving, and implementing water supply schemes. The Central Government supports these efforts with technical and financial assistance. Each state maintains records of villages that receive drinking water via tanker services.
Targeted Funding for Vulnerable Areas
The Jal Jeevan Mission employs a universal approach for covering rural households, assigning higher funding weightage to areas facing challenges. For instance, 30% of the funds are earmarked for difficult terrains, including regions under the Desert Development Programme and Drought Prone Area Programme. Additionally, 10% of funding is prioritized for communities predominantly composed of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Infrastructure Development for Sustainable Water Supply
To further enhance water accessibility, JJM includes provisions for developing and strengthening drinking water sources, as well as creating infrastructure for the bulk transfer, treatment, and distribution of water in areas with limited groundwater resources. This is particularly critical in drought-prone and desert regions.
