iPhone 17e Expected to Feature Premium Front Camera and Significant Upgrades
Apple is reportedly planning to enhance its iPhone lineup with the introduction of the iPhone 17e, which may feature the advanced 18MP Centre Stage front camera. This upgrade, which first appeared in the iPhone 17 series, replaces the longstanding 12MP TrueDepth camera. The move is unexpected for the ‘e’ series, typically designed to offer fewer features at a lower price point, but it signals Apple’s commitment to maintaining high-quality front-facing camera capabilities across its devices.
Centre Stage Camera Coming to More Models
The Centre Stage feature, initially launched with the 2021 iPad Pro, is designed to keep users centered during video calls by automatically tracking their movements. In the latest iPhones, this camera not only tracks movement but also seamlessly switches between portrait and landscape orientations. Additionally, it utilizes a wider 20mm lens, replacing the previous 23mm lens. Apple has made this upgrade available across all models in the iPhone 17 lineup, rather than restricting it to premium versions.
Tech analyst Jeff Pu has indicated that Apple intends to extend the 18MP front camera to the iPhone 17e, which is surprising given the model’s typical focus on cost-saving features. The current iPhone 16e, for instance, was launched at a price of Rs. 51,999 and features only one rear camera, lacking both MagSafe and Dynamic Island functionalities. This potential upgrade to the iPhone 17e suggests that Apple may be redefining its approach to the ‘e’ series, aiming for a more consistent user experience across its product range.
iPhone 17e: Key Features (Expected)
While it might seem logical for Apple to omit the new front camera to keep costs down, Pu believes that the Centre Stage upgrade is becoming a standard feature for the company. If this is accurate, it would indicate Apple’s intention to ensure uniformity in front-facing video performance across its devices.
In addition to the anticipated camera upgrade, rumors suggest that the iPhone 17e will be powered by the A19 chip and will include the Dynamic Island feature, along with a redesigned aesthetic. These enhancements could help narrow the gap between the ‘e’ model and the more expensive iPhones. However, features such as a 120Hz ProMotion display or additional rear cameras are not expected to be part of this model, keeping it aligned with its budget-friendly positioning.
iPhone 17e: Launch Timeline (Expected)
According to Pu’s report, Apple is likely to schedule the release of the iPhone 17e for mid-first quarter of 2026, which suggests a launch around February. This timeline would be consistent with the release of the iPhone 16e, which debuted on February 28.
The iPhone 16e faced challenges in establishing its market position due to its pricing, which was higher than typical budget devices yet close enough to the standard iPhone 16 that many consumers opted for the latter. To address this issue, Apple may coordinate the launch of the iPhone 17e with the regular iPhone release, creating a more cohesive strategy. If the 2026 model incorporates both the Centre Stage feature and Dynamic Island, it could present a compelling option for consumers. However, potential price reductions for the iPhone 17 could impact the demand for the lower-priced variant.
