INS Nipun Joins Indian Navy, Boosting Underwater Capabilities
The Indian Navy has officially commissioned INS Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel of the Nistar Class, on August 31, 2026, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. This addition marks a substantial enhancement to the Navy’s capabilities in deep-sea diving, underwater intervention, and submarine rescue operations.
The ceremony was led by Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, and attended by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command. The occasion also saw the presence of senior naval officials, Hindustan Shipyard Limited representatives, veterans, distinguished guests, and family members of the commissioning crew.

INS Nipun is an indigenously designed and constructed vessel by Hindustan Shipyard Limited based in Visakhapatnam. This ship significantly strengthens the Indian Navy’s specialized underwater capabilities and exemplifies India’s advancing skill in developing sophisticated naval platforms. Admiral Swaminathan emphasized that the unique capabilities of INS Nipun, available to only a few navies worldwide, positions India as a ‘Preferred Submarine Rescue Partner’ in the region, capable of providing specialized support for underwater salvage missions and humanitarian assistance operations.
