IndiGo Faces Flight Cancellations as Stock Price Drops Over 7% in Five Days; What’s Next for the Airline?

InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, is facing significant operational challenges that have led to widespread flight cancellations and a notable decline in its stock value. The turmoil, which has persisted for four days, has resulted in over 600 flights being canceled, severely impacting investor sentiment. As a result, IndiGo’s stock price fell by 2.5% to Rs 5,298.5 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Friday, reflecting the airline’s ongoing struggles in the market.

Flight Cancellations and Operational Disruptions

IndiGo has been grappling with massive flight cancellations, with more than 400 flights grounded on a single day. Major airports across the country have reported long queues and significant delays, causing frustration among travelers. For instance, Chennai Airport confirmed that around 20 departures and nearly a dozen arrivals were canceled by midday on December 5. Similarly, Goa’s Dabolim Airport announced the cancellation of 30 IndiGo flights to various destinations, including Bengaluru, Chennai, and Delhi. The airline’s on-time performance has plummeted to a mere 8.5%, according to data from the aviation ministry, raising concerns about its operational efficiency.

The situation has drawn the attention of both the civil aviation ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which are closely monitoring the developments. The DGCA has been in constant communication with IndiGo as the number of canceled flights has exceeded 1,000 in recent days. In response to the ongoing crisis, IndiGo has announced plans for further schedule cuts starting December 8, aiming to regain control over its operations.

Impact on Stock Market and Investor Sentiment

The operational chaos has had a direct impact on IndiGo’s stock performance. Over the past week, shares of InterGlobe Aviation have dropped more than 7%, with analysts predicting a potential decline of up to 16% if the cancellations persist. On Friday, the stock was trading at Rs 5,404 on the National Stock Exchange, down 32 points or 0.60%. This decline reflects the growing unease among investors regarding the airline’s ability to manage its operations effectively.

Despite the current market pressures, some global brokerages remain optimistic about IndiGo’s long-term prospects. Citi has maintained a “Buy” rating on the airline, setting a target price of Rs 6,500, which suggests a potential upside of 20%. The brokerage noted that IndiGo’s management is aware of the disruptions and is working to recalibrate schedules to restore stability. Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley has adjusted its target price to Rs 6,540, citing rising cost pressures and a softer profitability outlook.

Regulatory Relief and Future Outlook

In an effort to navigate the ongoing crisis, IndiGo has sought short-term regulatory relief from the DGCA. The airline has requested an exemption from night duty rules for its Airbus A320 operations until February 10, 2026. The DGCA has acknowledged this request, stating that IndiGo has assured them that corrective actions are underway to restore normal operations by the specified date. The temporary exemption is expected to help reduce passenger inconvenience while maintaining safety standards.

As IndiGo works to stabilize its operations, the coming days will be crucial for both the airline and its investors. The company is under pressure to not only restore operational efficiency but also to rebuild the confidence of its stakeholders. With the airline’s reputation at stake, the management’s ability to address these challenges effectively will be closely watched by both the aviation industry and the financial markets.
