India’s XR Innovators Shine at Hackathon

Mumbai, April 10, 2025 โ The landscape of immersive technology in India is evolving rapidly, thanks to the innovative minds showcased at the XR Creator Hackathon. Part of the Create in India Challenge (CIC) Season-1, this event, organized by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in collaboration with Wavelaps, has unveiled groundbreaking projects across various sectors, including education, healthcare, tourism, and e-commerce. Over 2,200 participants registered for the hackathon, which aimed to enhance India’s presence in the eXtended Reality (XR) space.
Winners Announced in Diverse Categories
The hackathon featured five thematic categories: healthcare-fitness & well-being, educational transformation, immersive tourism, digital media & entertainment, and e-commerce-retail transformation. After rigorous evaluations, five teams emerged victorious, representing a blend of students, professionals, and entrepreneurs from various cities. The winners were announced during a virtual ceremony streamed live on YouTube, highlighting the innovative spirit of participants from across the nation.
Spotlight on Winning Projects
The winning teams presented remarkable projects that address real-world challenges. The team XR Runners won in the ‘Educational Transformation’ category with their project ‘Eduscape XR,’ a VR-based platform that allows students to conduct immersive experiments in science subjects. Developed by students from IIT Kharagpur, this project aims to bridge the gap in laboratory infrastructure in many educational institutions.
In the ‘Healthcare, Fitness & Well-being’ category, team Cognihab took the top spot with their project of the same name. This initiative offers XR-powered rehabilitation solutions for conditions like lazy eye and stroke, focusing on practical outcomes in medical settings. Team lead Rishab Kapur emphasized the importance of refining their approach through the hackathon.
Team LumeXR won in the ‘Immersive Tourism’ category with their ‘Immersive Travel Guide,’ a mixed-reality platform that enhances travel planning through virtual exploration. Their project incorporates 3D maps and video stories, allowing users to experience destinations before booking. In the ‘E-Commerce & Retail Transformation’ category, team EMO’s project ‘Heaven Estate’ enables homeowners to visualize interior designs in AR, fostering collaboration between clients and designers.
Lastly, team Youth Buzz clinched victory in the ‘Digital Media & Entertainment’ category with their multiplayer tactical war game, ‘The Game of Dimensions,’ which offers an immersive experience across VR headsets and mobile devices. Team lead Mohit Kumar Sharma highlighted their goal of unifying gaming experiences across platforms.
Encouraging Diversity and Innovation
The hackathon showcased a significant representation from Tier 2 and 3 cities, with 66% of participants hailing from these regions. The age range of participants varied from 17 to 35 years, with a notable 19% of the finalists being women, indicating a positive trend towards gender diversity in XR innovation. The event not only highlighted the talent emerging from smaller cities but also emphasized the importance of inclusivity in technology development.
With the support of Wavelaps, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, and leading XR communities, the finalists are now preparing to present their projects at the upcoming WAVES Summit, a global media and entertainment event scheduled for May 1-4, 2025, in Mumbai. This platform will provide an opportunity for these innovative ideas to reach a global audience, marking a significant step forward for India’s XR landscape.
