India’s Textile Market Sees Robust Growth, According to New Report

The Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, unveiled today a comprehensive study titled “Market for Textiles and Clothing: National Household Survey 2024,” which reveals significant insights into the domestic demand for textiles and apparel in India. The study, conducted by the Textiles Committee under the Ministry of Textiles, showcases the remarkable growth of the textile sector over the past 15 years, highlighting the increasing role of households in driving demand.

According to the findings, the market size of textiles has skyrocketed from ₹4.89 lakh crores in 2010 to an impressive ₹14.95 lakh crores in 2024, representing a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.3%. Households have notably contributed to this surge, with their share rising from ₹4.18 lakh crores to ₹8.77 lakh crores during the same period, reinforcing their vital role in fueling domestic textile demand.

Growth in Per Capita Demand

The report also indicates a noteworthy increase in per capita demand for textiles, which jumped from ₹2,119 in 2010 to ₹6,066 in 2024, reflecting a CAGR growth of 7.8%. This upward trend underscores a strong consumer preference for textile products, with significant growth recorded particularly in man-made fibers (MMF) and blended fiber products, contributing 52.2% to the overall market, followed by cotton products at 41.2%.

Insights on Consumer Preferences

The data reveals that while cotton remains a major component of textile preferences, there is a marked shift towards MMF and blended fibers. In monetary terms, demand for MMF products surged from ₹1.47 lakh crores to ₹4.47 lakh crores, while the contribution from cotton products rose from ₹0.87 lakh crores to ₹3.53 lakh crores.

A key highlight from the study is the role of women consumers, who account for 55.5% of textile purchases compared to 44.5% by men. Popular items among consumers include shirts, sarees, trousers, and jeans, with men’s jeans emerging as the fastest-growing category. Additionally, leggings have become a favored choice among women consumers.

Sustainability Trends

Another important finding of the report is the growing demand for sustainable textile products. Consumers are increasingly opting for recycled and reused garments, with the market for sustainable textiles estimated at ₹37,000 crores in 2024, of which reused and retailored textiles make up 58%. This trend signals a rising consciousness around sustainable practices in the textile sector.

Technical Textiles on the Rise

The report also notes an increase in the adoption of technical textiles, with products such as masks and sanitary napkins seeing significant demand growth in both rural and urban households. Notably, rural areas account for nearly 58% of technical textile consumption, highlighting a disparity in urban-rural market dynamics.
