India’s Real Estate Sector: A Key Driver for Sustainable Development
In a significant address at the Confederation of Real Estate Developer Associations of India (CREDAI) National Conclave 2025 held in New Delhi, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav highlighted the vital role of the real estate sector in India’s economic advancement and urban development. The event also featured Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, as the Chief Guest.
The Minister emphasized that as India strives towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, urban planning and construction must prioritize inclusive and sustainable growth. He asserted that the goals of development and environmental protection are not at odds; they must evolve hand in hand. This entails integrating environmental considerations into the early stages of planning.
Real Estate’s Environmental Impact
Shri Yadav pointed out the significant impact of the real estate sector on energy consumption, water usage, waste management, air quality, and urban heat. He stated that this sector is crucial to fulfilling India’s climate obligations, including the ambitious Net Zero target set for 2070. Sustainability is now viewed not merely as an option but as the cornerstone of development aimed at the future.
Addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change, the Minister urged for a shift towards climate-resilient urban planning. This includes the use of flood-resilient designs, materials adaptable to heat, enhanced green cover, and innovative sustainable mobility solutions.
Modernizing Environmental Governance
During his address, the Minister outlined crucial reforms initiated by the Ministry aimed at improving environmental governance. These reforms include strengthening the environmental clearance process, promoting digital and technology-oriented systems, and adopting a risk-based regulatory approach. Additionally, he highlighted initiatives such as Mission LiFE, the Green Credit Programme, and enhancements to air and water quality management in urban settings.
Reassuring industry figures present at the conclave, Shri Yadav stated that the Government intends to incentivize compliance while addressing violations with firmness. He asserted that improving the Ease of Doing Business should not compromise environmental protections, nor should environmental safeguards lead to unnecessary delays in development.
Call for Sustainable Practices
The Minister encouraged industry players to take the lead in adopting energy-efficient designs, utilizing renewable energy, and implementing water-positive development strategies. He hailed circular construction practices and green buildings that not only add long-term value for urban areas but also benefit the community.
In conclusion, Shri Yadav voiced his appreciation for CREDAI’s commitment to national development, reiterating the role of industry bodies as key partners. He reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to sustainable urbanization, regulatory reforms, and collaborative governance to ensure that India’s cities develop in a manner that is inclusive, resilient, and harmonious with nature.
