India’s NMEDT Targets Critical Minerals for Economic Growth
In a recent meeting chaired by Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, the performance of the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust (NMEDT) for the fiscal year 2025–26 was thoroughly reviewed. Joining him was Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for the Department of Atomic Energy. The meeting took place in New Delhi and aimed to evaluate the trust’s strategy moving forward.
Shri G. Kishan Reddy emphasized the necessity for NMEDT to prioritize the exploration of critical minerals, highlighting that achieving _Aatmanirbharta_, or self-reliance, in this area is crucial for India’s economic growth and energy transition. He urged states to proceed with ongoing exploration projects more swiftly, ensuring quicker approvals and better coordination to significantly shorten the timeline from exploration to auction.
Innovative Approaches to Mineral Exploration
The minister urged the adoption of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, drone surveys, and modern beneficiation methods to increase efficiency and success in mineral discovery. He also called for the inclusion of startups, private exploration agencies, and innovative institutions, aligning with the goals of the _Startup India_ initiative, to inject fresh perspectives into the exploration landscape.
Investment in Critical Mineral Recovery
During the meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed the importance of strong collaboration, ongoing monitoring, and effective follow-up mechanisms to facilitate timely completion of exploration projects. He pointed out the need to integrate scientific institutions and leverage cutting-edge technologies into the mineral exploration sector to speed up results.
Highlights and Achievements of NMEDT
The meeting shed light on substantial achievements by NMEDT. The trust has expanded its mandate, having been renamed from the National Mineral Exploration Trust to the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust as part of reforms introduced in 2025. This change included increasing the financial contribution by lessees from 2% to 3% of royalty revenues to bolster exploration activities.
Furthermore, NMEDT is now authorized to fund exploration in offshore areas and innovations in mine development both within and outside India. The National Critical Mineral Mission Funding Initiative was launched to support pilot projects aiming at mineral recovery from byproducts such as tailings and fly ash, providing substantial funding for various initiatives.
Sustainable and Modernized Exploration Practices
NMEDT is also advocating for sustainability in mining and resource efficiency by assisting studies that identify critical minerals through geochemical analysis. Financial aid is being awarded to the Indian Bureau of Mines to assess recovery potentials. These practices align with the National Tailings Policy, promoting sustainability, resource efficiency, and a circular mineral economy.
Moreover, NMEDT is encouraging modern exploration techniques and has sanctioned 76 projects for critical mineral exploration during FY 2025–26, with significant interest from the private sector. So far, 45 NMEDT-funded blocks have been successfully auctioned, marking a promising trend in mineral exploration and development in India.
