India’s National Maritime Heritage Complex Targets July 2026 Completion
The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has set an ambitious target for the completion of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, aiming to launch Phase 1 by July 2026. During a recent review of the project’s progress, Sonowal emphasized the need for accelerated construction efforts and strict adherence to timelines in order to operationalize this landmark initiative.
The NMHC is envisioned as a world-class destination that highlights India’s rich maritime history and its connections to the sea. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we aim to celebrate our maritime heritage while inspiring future generations. It’s crucial that we meet deadlines without compromising on quality,” said Sonowal.
International Collaboration to Enhance Maritime Heritage
In a bid to enhance the project’s global significance, Sonowal highlighted the importance of working together with neighboring and maritime nations. He called for partnerships with members of ASEAN and others to showcase India’s shared oceanic heritage. Currently, India has already forged ten Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with several countries including the Netherlands, Germany, and South Korea, and plans to establish four more collaborations with Italy, France, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
Cross-Ministerial Efforts for Sustainable Development
The minister stressed the necessity for improved collaboration among various ministries, particularly with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism, to position the NMHC as a key cultural and tourism hub. He also requested the development of a comprehensive calendar of events in coordination with national and state tourism departments to boost visitor engagement.
Additionally, Sonowal sought clarity on the project’s revenue model to ensure its long-term sustainability and viability, reinforcing that the NMHC is a platform that extends beyond just infrastructure; it symbolizes India’s maritime spirit and highlights its historical connections.
Upcoming Phases and Heritage Conservation
Phase 1A of the project, which is slated for completion by July of this year, consists of six museum galleries, Lothal township, aquatic theming, and a display of Indian Navy artifacts among other features. The forthcoming Phase 1B will require an investment of approximately ₹3,000 crore and will introduce eight additional galleries, a lighthouse museum, and a dome theatre, further enhancing the complex’s offerings.
Once fully operational, the NMHC is poised to become a global centerpiece for maritime history and culture, significantly supporting India’s goal to preserve its heritage while fostering economic growth.
