On the 20th anniversary of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted India’s significant advancements in disaster preparedness and ocean research. Speaking at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), he emphasized India’s emergence as a global leader in disaster warning systems. The minister reflected on the lessons learned from the tsunami, which claimed over 230,000 lives worldwide, including 10,749 in India. Dr. Jitendra Singh praised India’s progress in developing world-class disaster warning systems. He pointed out that the Indian Tsunami Early Warning System has gained international recognition for its effectiveness. Looking ahead, Dr. Singh expressed optimism about future breakthroughs in both marine and space missions. He announced plans to deploy an Indian in the deep sea and another in space by 2026, marking a historic milestone for the nation. International Collaboration and Community Resilience
The minister highlighted India’s proactive role in international collaboration through INCOIS, which serves as a UNESCO Category 2 Training Centre. Dr. Singh noted INCOIS’s involvement in the Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme, which aims to achieve 100% tsunami-ready communities globally by 2030.

The minister emphasized the importance of integrating tsunami warnings with other ocean-related hazards, such as storm surges and high waves.
