India’s GST Collections Surge: Revenue Increases by 13.9% in June, Reaching Rs 1.94 Lakh Crore
India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections reached Rs 1,94,812 crore in June 2026, marking a 13.9% increase year-on-year. This growth was primarily fueled by a significant rise in tax revenues from imports, as reported by the finance ministry on Wednesday. The latest figures surpass the Rs 1,71,105 crore collected in June 2025, with net GST revenue, after refunds, rising 11.2% to Rs 1,62,377 crore from Rs 1,45,984 crore a year earlier.
Import revenues drive growth
The data indicates a notable difference between domestic and import-led tax collections for the month. Gross revenue from domestic transactions increased by 6.5% to Rs 1,34,774 crore, compared to Rs 1,26,506 crore in June 2025. In contrast, GST revenue from imports surged by 34.6% to Rs 60,038 crore, up from Rs 44,600 crore a year ago, significantly contributing to the overall collections. The government also enhanced refund disbursements during this period, with total GST refunds rising by 29.1% to Rs 32,436 crore in June 2026, compared to Rs 25,121 crore in the same month last year.
Collections up 8.4% so far this fiscal
For the financial year up to June 2026, gross GST collections totaled Rs 6,31,699 crore, reflecting an 8.4% growth over Rs 5,82,542 crore in the same period last year. Domestic GST collections rose by 2.8% to Rs 4,54,427 crore, while import-related GST revenues increased by 26.2% to Rs 1,77,273 crore. Total refunds during this period amounted to Rs 91,482 crore, resulting in net GST collections of Rs 5,40,218 crore.
Maharashtra leads state collections
Maharashtra continued to dominate domestic GST collections among major states, with revenues increasing by 9% to Rs 30,714 crore from Rs 28,248 crore in June 2025. Karnataka and Gujarat also experienced double-digit growth, collecting Rs 12,937 crore and Rs 11,743 crore, respectively. Uttar Pradesh showed strong performance, with GST collections rising 19% to Rs 9,165 crore. However, several states reported declines, with Sikkim experiencing the largest drop of 53% to Rs 170 crore. Puducherry saw a 28% decrease, while Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand reported declines of 26% and 21%, respectively. Tamil Nadu also recorded a slight 2% decline in collections to Rs 9,776 crore.
GST reform showing maturity
Manoj Mishra, partner and tax controversy management leader at Grant Thornton Bharat, commented on the latest figures, noting that the June collections reflect the resilience of India’s tax system amid global uncertainties. He stated that the robust 13.9% year-on-year growth in June GST collections demonstrates the strength of India’s revenue base during challenging economic times. Mishra highlighted the significant rise in import GST and increased refunds as indicators of improving tax administration, emphasizing that the consistency of collections around the Rs 2 lakh crore mark illustrates the maturation of the GST framework as it approaches its ninth anniversary.
