India’s Employment Growth: Key Initiatives and Achievements

India has experienced remarkable employment growth in recent years. Between 2016-17 and 2023-24, the country added approximately 170 million jobs, marking a 36% increase in employment. This growth reflects India’s robust economic trajectory and the effectiveness of various job creation initiatives. Programs such as e-Shram, Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana, and the National Career Service have played crucial roles in supporting employment, particularly in rural areas. These initiatives aim to enhance the workforce and ensure sustainable job creation across diverse sectors.

e-Shram: A Comprehensive Support System for Workers

Launched on August 26, 2021, the e-Shram portal aims to register and support unorganised workers in India. It provides these workers with a Universal Account Number (UAN) and creates a National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW). The portal serves as a one-stop solution for unorganised workers, allowing them to access various social security and welfare schemes.

On October 21, 2024, the e-Shram portal was further enhanced to integrate multiple social security schemes into a single platform. This integration allows registered workers to view the benefits they have availed through the portal. As of January 27, 2025, over 30.58 crore unorganised workers have registered on e-Shram. Additionally, 12 schemes from different central ministries have been mapped with the portal, providing a streamlined approach to accessing essential services and benefits.

The e-Shram initiative is vital for improving the livelihoods of unorganised workers, who often lack access to formal employment benefits. By providing a structured support system, the government aims to empower these workers and enhance their economic stability.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana: Reviving Employment Post-Pandemic

The Aatmanirbhar Bharat Rojgar Yojana (ABRY) was launched on October 1, 2020, in response to the employment crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary objective of ABRY is to incentivize employers to create new jobs and restore lost employment during the pandemic. This initiative aims to stimulate job creation and support economic recovery.

As of March 31, 2024, the program has disbursed a total of ₹10,188.50 crore to approximately 60.49 lakh beneficiaries across 1.52 lakh establishments. This financial support has been crucial in helping businesses recover and rehire employees. By providing incentives to employers, the government encourages the creation of sustainable jobs, which is essential for long-term economic growth.

The ABRY initiative not only addresses immediate employment needs but also fosters a culture of job creation in the post-pandemic landscape. It highlights the government’s commitment to supporting both employers and employees during challenging times.

National Career Service: Bridging the Gap Between Job Seekers and Employers

The National Career Service (NCS) was launched on July 20, 2015, as a comprehensive platform for career-related services. Its primary goal is to connect job seekers with employers and provide information on job fairs, skill training programs, and career guidance. The NCS aims to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers, facilitating a smoother transition into the workforce.

In 2024, the NCS portal reported 1.89 crore vacancies available, bringing the total to 3.89 crore since its inception. Additionally, 8,263 job fairs were organized, with 43,874 employers participating, resulting in the provisional selection of 2.6 lakh candidates. The portal also saw significant growth, with 17.23 lakh new employers and 1.38 crore new job seekers registering in the past year.

By providing a centralized platform for job-related services, the NCS enhances the job search experience for candidates and helps employers find suitable talent. This initiative is crucial for addressing the skills gap in the labor market and ensuring that job seekers are well-equipped to meet the demands of various industries.

A Holistic Approach to Employment Welfare

In addition to the initiatives mentioned, the Indian government has implemented various programs aimed at enhancing employment welfare. These include the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme, and support for gig and platform workers. Together, these initiatives reflect a holistic approach to employment welfare, focusing on job security and opportunities for the workforce.

The government’s commitment to job creation and workforce development is evident in the significant achievements of these programs. As India continues to grow economically, these initiatives will play a vital role in ensuring that the benefits of growth are shared widely among its citizens.
