India’s Defence Readiness Strengthened by Indigenous Innovations
In a recent address, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the success of _Operation Sindoor_ in showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in defence technologies. The event took place at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) where top-performing scientists were honored as Special Guests at the 77th Republic Day Parade. Singh praised the pivotal role of DRDO in transforming India’s defence capabilities under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Singh urged DRDO scientists to pursue innovative and rapid development approaches, emphasizing the need to stay ahead in a technology-driven world. “Technology is evolving at a breakneck pace; what is groundbreaking today might become obsolete in just a few years,” he remarked. The minister underscored the importance of a proactive mindset, stressing that nations must quickly think, decide, and deploy technologies on the battlefield.
Encouraging Innovation and Collaboration
In a bid to further bolster indigenous development, Singh encouraged DRDO to extend its focus beyond areas where private industries have already established capabilities. He recommended creating a dedicated wing to explore high-risk sectors where success could yield historic advancements. “Reducing the time from research to deployment is crucial; the timely induction of new technologies into the Armed Forces should be our top performance metric,” he asserted.
A Call for Strategic Partnerships
Rajnath Singh also emphasized the necessity for DRDO to collaborate with both public and private sectors. Drawing on the success of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, he noted that effective knowledge sharing between DRDO and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has led to significant achievements. He called for a shift from a monopolistic R&D model to a more collaborative ecosystem involving academia, industries, MSMEs, and start-ups, affirming that this approach is vital for realizing an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliant India.
Boosting Defence Exports
Highlighting the government’s commitment to self-reliance, Singh shared that India’s defence exports soared from under ₹1,000 crore in 2014 to an impressive approximately ₹24,000 crore today. He announced an ambitious target of reaching ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029-30, encouraging DRDO to consider international markets from the design phase, particularly in sectors like drones and electronic warfare systems.
Acknowledging Excellence in Defence Technology
During the event, numerous awards were given to honor exceptional contributors in the field. The prestigious Dr. Bhagavantam Technology Leadership Award was presented to Shri BV Paparao for his leadership in developing Agni missile technologies. Additionally, Dr. Balaguru V received the Dr. Nagchaudhuri Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on key defence platforms like the MBT Arjun MK-1.
The celebrations also included the release of a book detailing the journey of India’s first indigenous supersonic missile system, AKASH. The book, authored by esteemed DRDO figures, symbolizes the organization’s dedication to scientific excellence and the overarching goal of self-reliance.
