India’s Defence Modernization Achieves New Heights Ahead of Independence Day
As India approaches the 80th anniversary of its Independence Day, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to modernizing the nation’s defence forces. In an address to soldiers via Akashvani on August 14, 2026, he highlighted the remarkable advancements made in India’s defence sector over the past 12 years, driven by initiatives like ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’. Singh stated that India has now evolved into a country that not only meets its own security requirements but is also becoming a prominent player in global defence manufacturing and exports.
The Defence Minister pointed out that the domestic defence production has experienced a phenomenal increase—from Rs 46,000 crore in 2014 to an impressive Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the Financial Year 2025-26. This nearly four-fold growth illustrates the significant structural changes that have occurred in this sector. Singh noted that as of now, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other public sector enterprises contribute about 76% of total defence production, while private sectors have risen slightly to 24%, up from 22% in the prior fiscal year.
Singh called attention to the leap in defence exports, which have soared from merely Rs 686 crore in FY 2013-14 to a staggering Rs 38,424 crore in FY 2025-26—a surge of over 5,500%. He deemed this achievement as a powerful testament to India’s growing self-reliance in defence. “With 145 defence exporters now catering to over 80 countries, I’m optimistic about reaching our goal of Rs 50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029,” he expressed.
In discussing budget allocations, Singh noted a significant rise in India’s defence budget from Rs 2.53 lakh crore in FY 2013-14 to Rs 7.85 lakh crore in FY 2026-27. He stated this reflects the country’s escalating focus on advanced defence technologies. The capital expenditure has also progressed dramatically, increasing from Rs 94,588 crore to Rs 2.19 lakh crore, while the Research & Development budget has seen a remarkable 90% rise, now standing at Rs 29,100 crore.
The Defence Acquisition Council has played a crucial role in this transformation, approving projects worth over Rs 8.75 lakh crore in just the past year, underscoring the government’s emphasis on modernisation. Changes in defence procurement, including increased financial ceilings for Field Commanders, have boosted operational efficiency, highlighting a pronounced push towards indigenisation.
Singh noted the strong collaboration of the defence forces in driving Aatmanirbharta. Indigenous advancements in technology, such as warships, aircraft, and military systems, are enhancing the Defence Forces’ capabilities. He specifically mentioned successful tests of critical systems, like the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation system and advancements in missile technology, including the Agni Missile equipped with MIRV technology.
Highlighting border area development, Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing defence readiness and connectivity to these regions. He praised the defence forces as the first responders to national disasters, showcasing their pivotal role in emergency operations.
Additionally, Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of serving and retired personnel, mentioning a 300% increase in the budget for health schemes for ex-servicemen and substantial enhancements to various grants supporting their families. He acknowledged the vital role of women in the armed forces and celebrated the commissioning of female cadets from the National Defence Academy as a historic milestone.
As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, Singh reflected on the legacy of freedom fighters and the ongoing responsibility of the Defence Forces to protect the country’s sovereignty and integrity. He invited all citizens to actively participate in nation-building and embody the spirit of patriotism and service to India.
