India’s Commerce Minister to Strengthen Ties with Switzerland
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, is set to embark on an important visit to Berne, Switzerland, on June 12, 2026. This trip aims to foster discussions with senior representatives of the Swiss government as well as leaders in the Swiss pharmaceutical sector. The visit highlights India’s commitment to bolstering its economic ties with Switzerland and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) nations.
India and the EFTA states—comprising Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland—formalized their economic partnership with the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) in March 2024. This agreement came into effect in October 2025 and serves as a comprehensive framework aimed at enhancing trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two parties.
During his visit, Shri Goyal plans to engage with prominent Swiss officials, including Ms. Helene Budliger Artieda, the State Secretary for Economic Affairs, and Mr. Guy Parmelin, the Federal President of Switzerland. Key topics on the agenda will revolve around the implementation of the TEPA, the resolution of operational challenges related to the agreement, and strategies to boost bilateral trade and investment initiatives.
In addition to governmental discussions, Shri Goyal will interact with influential figures from the Swiss pharmaceutical industry. This engagement is expected to facilitate dialogues aimed at addressing mutual interests and operational dynamics within the sector.
Additionally, the Minister intends to meet with Swiss companies and investors in Zurich. These meetings will explore opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment, paving the way for deeper economic collaboration between India and Switzerland.
Shri Goyal will be joined by senior officials from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This high-profile visit is anticipated to support the effective implementation of TEPA and further reinforce the enduring economic partnership between India and Switzerland.
