India’s Battle Against Plastic Pollution: Key Updates and Initiatives

The Indian government is ramping up its efforts to tackle plastic pollution, as recent data reveals significant plastic waste generation across the nation. According to the latest figures from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the total generation of plastic waste was approximately 4.13 million tonnes per annum (TPA) in 2022-23, showing a slight increase from 2020-21’s figures. In Delhi, plastic waste generation was notably high, estimated at 345,000 TPA for 2020-21 and increasing to 377,596 TPA in 2021-22.

Prohibition on Single-Use Plastics

In a decisive move to combat plastic pollution, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change established a ban on certain single-use plastics, effective July 1, 2022. This prohibition targets items deemed to have low utility and high litter potential, which includes plastic carry bags thinner than 120 microns. State and Union Territory authorities have been actively enforcing this ban, leading to over 861,908 inspections, the seizure of 1,989 tonnes of banned items, and the imposition of fines totaling over ₹19.83 crores since the ban’s implementation.

Extended Producer Responsibility Framework

In addition to enforcement measures, the government has introduced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) guidelines as part of the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules. These guidelines mandate that producers, importers, and brand owners take responsibility for the lifecycle of plastic packaging. According to the Centralized Online EPR Portal, over 60,000 stakeholders are currently registered, and since the guidelines took effect, approximately 2.07 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste has been successfully recycled.

World Environment Day Celebrations and Campaigns

The Ministry marked World Environment Day 2025 with the theme ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’. As part of the month-long campaign, around 69,000 events engaged nearly 2.1 million participants nationwide. Authorities launched a “Compendium of Manufacturers/Sellers of Eco-alternatives to Banned Single Use Plastic Items,” providing access to innovative alternatives aimed at reducing plastic usage.

National Plastic Pollution Reduction Campaign

Additionally, the National Plastic Pollution Reduction Campaign (NPPRC) commenced on June 5, running until October 31, 2025. This initiative includes targeted actions to minimize plastic pollution in urban and rural areas, under the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ program. Special efforts are being made to reduce avoidable single-use plastics in government offices. Notably, a hackathon focusing on eco-alternatives was organized as part of the campaign to promote innovative solutions against plastic waste.

These comprehensive efforts highlight the government’s commitment to addressing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices across India. The ongoing initiatives aim not only to curb plastic waste but to foster a circular economy emphasizing recycling and responsible production.
