India’s Ambitious 100 GW Nuclear Capacity by 2047
The Indian government is taking significant steps towards enhancing its nuclear power capacity with a strategic plan aimed at reaching approximately 100 gigawatts (GW) by 2047. The expansion includes a goal to increase the current nuclear power capacity to around 22 GW by the fiscal year 2031-32, through the timely completion of ongoing projects. Notably, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is projected to contribute about 54 GW towards this ambitious target.
Utilizing Thorium for Sustainable Energy
India is uniquely positioned with limited uranium resources and abundant thorium reserves. Unlike uranium, thorium is a fertile material that must be converted to fissile uranium-233 within a nuclear reactor to generate energy through nuclear fission. Understanding this, the Department of Atomic Energy’s Three-Stage Nuclear Power Programme is central to India’s strategy. This initiative focuses on the efficient use of scarce uranium resources while tapping into the country’s extensive thorium reserves to ensure long-term energy security in a sustainable way.
The Three-Stage Nuclear Power Programme
The Three-Stage Nuclear Power Programme consists of multiple phases. It begins with using natural uranium in Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), followed by leveraging plutonium derived from the spent fuel of PHWRs in Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs). Subsequent stages will prioritize large-scale utilization of thorium by using fissile uranium-233 that is bred from thorium in breeder reactors, with a focus on achieving substantial installed capacity of FBRs before moving forward.
Current Projects in Tamil Nadu
The Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI) is actively commissioning a 500-megawatt (MWe) Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The government has also granted approval for preparatory activities for the establishment of two additional 500 MWe units as part of the FBR 1&2 project at the same location.
Engaging the Community
In line with environmental and social responsibilities, an impact assessment study for these nuclear initiatives will be conducted as per regulatory norms. BHAVINI is committed to fostering trust within the local community through planned corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and outreach efforts. These outreach activities are designed to educate the public about the benefits of nuclear energy and the safety features of the PFBR, targeting local residents as well as students from nearby schools and colleges.
