Indian Railways Invests ₹270 Crore to Enhance Safety with Kavach

In a significant move to boost railway safety through homegrown technology, Indian Railways has allocated ₹270 crore for the implementation of the Kavach safety system across 631 Route Kilometres (RKm) of the East Coast Railway. This project will enhance the safety infrastructure on six crucial railway sections and underlines the Indian government’s commitment to improving train operations across the country.

The Kavach system will be installed in the following railway sections: Baghuapal–Budhapank, Haridaspur–Paradeep, Khurda Road (KUR)-Balangir, Naupada-Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road-Junagarh, and Bobbili-Salur. This initiative is a part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to deploy the Kavach system combined with an LTE-based communication framework across its extensive network.

Revolutionizing Train Safety with Indigenous Technology

Developed in India, Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to significantly enhance passenger safety by preventing dangerous incidents such as signal passing at danger (SPAD), over-speeding, and train collisions. The system operates continuously, monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when necessary. This automation improves operational safety and mitigates risks associated with train travel.

Boosting Operational Efficiency and Reliability

The introduction of Kavach on these selected routes will foster a new standard of safety in train operations by ensuring automatic protection and collision avoidance. Furthermore, the system is engineered to maintain safe and reliable train movement during adverse weather conditions, including severe fog, which is common in various regions of India. As a result, this improvement is poised to enhance service reliability and punctuality for passengers and freight trains alike.

A Commitment to Safety Across East Coast Railway

This major investment aims to benefit both passenger and freight operations, particularly in Odisha and its neighboring regions served by the East Coast Railway. The move also reinforces Indian Railways’ dedicated effort to expand Kavach coverage across high-traffic routes deemed strategically important, enhancing the overall safety infrastructure of the railway network.
