Indian Railways Enhances Catering Services with Innovative Monitoring

In a significant move to improve passenger services, Sh. Satish Kumar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board, conducted a thorough review of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) War Room at its office. The primary focus was on enhancing systems for passenger feedback, kitchen monitoring, and quality assurance in catering services.

During the review, the CRB engaged with the dedicated team responsible for tracking feedback and monitoring activities. He stressed the importance of making these systems more responsive, utilizing technology to deliver better outcomes for passengers. Kumar directed that the Rail Madad interface should be further automated, allowing passengers to easily communicate with the system with just one click. Additionally, he emphasized the need for closer observation of complaints through Rail Madad, advocating for direct communication with passengers to better understand and address their concerns.

Enhancements in Kitchen Monitoring

The review also zeroed in on advancing real-time kitchen monitoring within railway catering. Currently, four camera feeds are utilized for overseeing kitchen operations, but the CRB insisted on integrating more cameras in raw material storage zones, coupled with a Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) camera for extensive and effective surveillance of kitchen activities. This camera system not only tracks kitchen conditions but also assesses the functionality of operations. During the review, it was pointed out that a kitchen in Anantapur, part of the South Central Railway network, needed considerable improvements as revealed by both on-site inspections and video monitoring.

One area identified for focused scrutiny was the preparation of roti and paratha, where the CRB called for a comprehensive review of the processes to ensure consistent quality in food served to passengers.

Strengthening Third-Party Inspections

Kumar also evaluated the role of third-party inspection agencies in maintaining catering standards. While third-party inspections are present at various locations, he stressed the need for effective and meaningful results. Agencies that consistently fail to deliver should be reconsidered for potential removal to ensure that standards are upheld and that the quality assurance framework is effective.

Furthermore, the use of Artificial Intelligence in monitoring was discussed. The CRB stated that AI-based alerts regarding issues such as pests should not only identify problems but should lead to decisive action through warning letters and corrective measures, thus ensuring that deficiencies are addressed without delay.

The initiatives outlined in this review are essential for enhancing the quality of railway catering services. They aim to bolster passenger confidence, improve food quality and hygiene standards, and forge a more responsive, passenger-centric catering system across Indian Railways.
