Indian Government Reduces Airline Charges Amid West Asia Crisis
The ongoing crisis in West Asia has significantly impacted global aviation, but the Indian domestic aviation sector remains sturdy. Thanks to timely interventions by the Government, Indian carriers continue to adapt and thrive despite the challenging circumstances.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is actively monitoring the situation and has implemented various measures to support domestic airlines. Recently, the Government decided to limit the increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices for Indian carriers to just 25% for domestic flights. This decision is in stark contrast to the global surge in crude prices that has driven ATF costs up by over 100%.
Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Ram Mohan Naidu, emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the goal has been to make air travel more affordable and accessible. By managing operational costs effectively, the Government has aimed to ensure that rising fuel prices do not translate into significant hardships for passengers. Minister Naidu highlighted that while fuel costs have surged, the Government’s approach has been to moderate the impact on domestic operations.
Support Measures for Airlines
To further bolster the struggling airlines, the Ministry has announced a 25% reduction in landing and parking charges at major airports for three months. This initiative aims to alleviate financial pressure on airlines and maintain passenger-friendly airfare. Minister Naidu noted that consultations with stakeholders, including airlines, airport operators, and the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA), are ongoing to address these financial challenges.
The AERA has been instructed to implement this 25% reduction in landing and parking charges immediately, applicable to all domestic flights at major airports. This strategic move is anticipated to save airlines approximately ₹400 crore in operational costs over the three-month period. Adjustments to any airport under-recoveries will be addressed during the next tariff determination cycle, which spans five years.
Wider Impact on Airport Charges
Additionally, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will also apply this reduction at all non-major airports, ensuring comprehensive support for domestic airlines. These coordinated efforts underscore the Government’s commitment to maintaining the viability of air travel in India during this turbulent time.
