Indian Equity Markets Struggle Amid Global Trade Uncertainty

The Indian equity markets faced significant challenges this past week as external factors, particularly concerns over global trade, weighed heavily on investor sentiment. As the threat of increased tariffs emerged from U.S. President Donald Trump, traders demonstrated a marked preference for caution, leading to a substantial decline in key indices.

Market Performance Overview

During the early sessions, the Nifty 50 index clung to the 25,800 mark, briefly entering a consolidation phase. However, as the week unfolded, persistent selling pressures resulted in a dip of approximately 2.40%. This bearish trend was characterized by the formation of lower highs and lower lows, illustrating the prevailing negative sentiment in the market. The index recorded an intraday low of 25,623, where only minor buying kept the decline from worsening; however, weak trading volumes stunted any real momentum for a recovery.

From a technical standpoint, the Nifty 50 appears embattled, remaining below crucial short-term moving averages (20-DMA and 50-DMA). Moreover, momentum indicators convey ongoing downside pressure, with the Relative Strength Index (RSI) falling to 38 and edging closer to oversold conditions. Current support levels are seen near 25,600, with a robust foundation around 25,500, while resistance looms at 26,000 and again between 26,050 and 26,100. Although the immediate outlook suggests a firm bearish bias, the broader weekly and monthly trends indicate that the decline may be corrective rather than indicative of a full-scale trend reversal.

Banking Index Faces Decline

The Bank Nifty index did not escape the turbulence, suffering a continuous decline for three sessions in a row. The technical indicators paint a stark picture, with the index trading below a descending trendline and consistently registering lower highs and lower lows. Attempts at recovery have been met with resistance, as traders sold into mitigated buying near previous overhead levels, exhibiting a lack of conviction among buyers. The failure of the index to maintain momentum above the 59,400–59,500 level has exacerbated market sentiment, pushing projections for further declines toward 59,200–59,100, with potential dips reaching the 59,000 level if current trends persist.

Overall, the outlook for both the Nifty and Bank Nifty remains pessimistic, with market participants expressing a preference for caution as they navigate through a landscape of rising uncertainties. A significant turnaround would demand a decisive breakout on higher trading volumes, which currently seems unlikely given the existing market conditions.
