India Unveils Ambitious Plan to Revolutionize Coaching Standards

In a significant move towards realizing the Government of India’s vision for a developed nation by 2047, the Task Force set up by the Department of Sports has presented key recommendations for enhancing the coaching ecosystem. Spearheaded by esteemed badminton coach Shri Pullela Gopichand, the Task Force’s report aims to position India as a frontrunner in the global sporting arena.

This comprehensive review explores crucial elements such as coach education, training quality, and necessary academic reforms. It aims to create a robust framework for the professionalization and accreditation of sports coaches across the country, ensuring a future-ready coaching ecosystem.

Establishment of National Coach Accreditation Board

Among the report’s notable recommendations is the establishment of a National Coach Accreditation Board (NCAB), envisioned as the chief governing body for coach education across India. The NCAB will take charge of setting national standards, approving coaching pathways, and accrediting institutions, thereby ensuring consistency and quality throughout various sports.

Introducing a Tiered Coaching Pathway

The Task Force has laid out a Tiered National Coaching Pathway that includes different levels: Grassroots, Intermediate, Elite, and National Team Coach, with a universal entry level designated as Level 0. This innovative system aims to provide flexible entry options for former athletes, physical education teachers, and sports science graduates, emphasizing merit-based advancement linked to measurable outcomes and ongoing professional development.

Focus on Practical Coach Education

Emphasizing real-world readiness, the Task Force proposes a Practice-First Coach Education Model. This model is structured around a Practice-Theory-Practice training philosophy. Out of the total 1,800 hours designated for coach education, about 78% will be dedicated to hands-on field experiences, mentored internships, and supervised coaching practices, while the rest will encompass vital subjects like sports science, psychology, ethics, safety, and performance analytics.

TOPS for Coaches and National Sports Science Helpline

Inspired by the successful Target Olympic Podium Scheme for athletes, the Task Force also suggested creating a “TOPS for Coaches” initiative. This program seeks to furnish high-potential coaches with financial support and opportunities for advanced training, international exposure, and innovation in coaching techniques.

Moreover, to enhance science-driven decision-making in coaching, a round-the-clock National Sports Science Helpline is proposed. This service will be staffed by a team of experts, including sports scientists and nutritionists, and will offer real-time advice on topics such as injury prevention and training management. The helpline will be accessible via a toll-free number, a mobile app, and an online portal.
