India-UK Trade Agreement Set to Transform Bilateral Relations

In a significant move to bolster bilateral trade, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal has announced the deployment of 1,000 advisory personnel nationwide and the upgrade of a trade portal aimed at helping businesses fully leverage the upcoming India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), effective July 15, 2026. This comprehensive free trade agreement is expected to boost bilateral trade by an impressive £25.5 billion annually.

Strengthening Economic Ties

During the 10th Annual UK-India Week held in London, Shri Goyal emphasized the expanding partnership between India and the UK, which now extends beyond traditional trade to encompass critical sectors like technology, sovereign AI, defence, critical minerals, and clean energy. He highlighted the evolving nature of the partnership as a testament to the deepening economic ties between the two nations.

Welcoming Indian Businesses

At a reception hosted by the High Commission of India along with FICCI, the Minister welcomed the largest, most geographically diverse Indian business delegation to the UK. This delegation featured significant representation from enterprises in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, marking the presence of several first-time exporters keen on exploring new opportunities.

Benefits for Professionals

Shri Goyal also pointed out that the CETA includes benefits for Indian professionals, offering a five-year exemption from social security contributions for eligible individuals working in the UK. This allows professionals to redirect their savings into interest-bearing, tax-free provident fund accounts back in India.

Regional Partnerships for Growth

The Minister underscored the need to strengthen economic partnerships at regional levels, citing important links like Birmingham-Gujarat and Manchester-Maharashtra as pivotal for future growth. He encouraged businesses to showcase the strengths of Brand India confidently, emphasizing the country’s capabilities in manufacturing, services, and innovation.

Capitalizing on Opportunities

With India recognized as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, Shri Goyal urged Indian businesses to connect with partners in the UK to enhance market access and improve competitiveness. He stated that the CETA will open new avenues across various sectors, facilitating greater movement for professionals and fostering significant growth opportunities.

Call to Action

He reiterated India’s potential as a hub of trust, talent, and inclusive growth, urging businesses to take advantage of opportunities emerging from India’s sustained economic momentum and expanding global participation. The Minister’s message resonated with a strong call for Indian businesses to adopt international quality standards and actively participate in enhancing trade with the UK.
