India to Launch National Coaching Framework for Athletes
The Government of India is taking significant steps to revamp its coaching ecosystem through the establishment of a unified national framework. A recent report submitted by the Task Force on Unified Framework for Development of Coaching Ecosystem outlines critical recommendations aimed at enhancing coach education and accreditation across the nation. These reforms promise to standardize coaching practices from grassroots levels to elite sports.
The report suggests the creation of the National Coach Accreditation Board (NCAB), which will serve as the apex body responsible for setting national coaching standards. This board is tasked with approving and monitoring coaching pathways, accrediting educational institutions, and ensuring that all coaching practices align with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The introduction of mandatory licensing and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for coaches is also a key focus, ensuring that coaches remain current with the latest methodologies and best practices.
Structured Coaching Pathways Across India
The Task Force’s report highlights the need for a structured and tiered national coaching pathway that encompasses various levels, including Grassroots, Intermediate, Elite, and National Team coaches. This pathway aims to facilitate the progression of community coaches and Physical Education (PE) teachers as essential contributors to the coaching framework. To further enhance coaching effectiveness, clear entry and progression criteria at each tier will be established, alongside measures such as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to aid former athletes transitioning into coaching roles.
Additionally, proposed bridge programs will support PE teachers to upskill without interrupting their school duties. Coaches will also be subjected to a five-star performance rating system tied to the development outcomes of athletes, which will unlock opportunities for advanced certifications and higher-level assignments.
Phased Implementation of Recommendations
The implementation of these recommendations will occur in phases, starting with the establishment of the NCAB and finalizing the unified coaching curriculum. This initial phase will pave the way for a comprehensive rollout of licensing and structured coaching pathways across the country, including states like Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.
The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, provided this information during a recent Lok Sabha session, emphasizing the government’s commitment to nurturing a robust coaching environment nationwide. The proposed changes aim to enhance the quality of sports coaching in India, ensuring that coaches are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to develop the next generation of athletes.
